Refined sugar, high fructose corn syrup

I'm wanting to go for a more "organic" diet in order to boost my immune system, metabolism, etc. I want to feel healthier and the weaponized avian flu thread kind of freaked me out so I figured if I go a little more organic and boost my immune system maybe I'll be fine. My question is about sugar though.

What do people mean by "refined sugar"? If I go buy a 4 pound bag of "pure sugar" or use the "pure sugar" packets at restaurants, is that refined, or good? I know that fructose corn syrup is bad news, but what about sugar? And is it possible to buy pure cane sugar to use to sweeten things? I also know that sweeteners like equal and sweet n low are bad news too. But I'm a fan of sweet things, so what is my alternative? I want to avoid "refined sugar" (whatever that is) and corn syrup, I just don't know a good alternative or if I'm able to buy good cane sugar.

Honey would be a good alternative. It is nearly impossible to avoid high fructose corn syrup in any product you buy at the store- outside health food stores but even then you need to read the labels. A lot of any of it is not good for your health. Organic alone will not really improve your immune system. Eating healthier foods and getting exercies will. Organic foods are not different from non- organic in terms of nutrition. They just may not have pesticides in them.

Yes they are different besides pesticides as Organic foods do not contain Genetically Modified Organisms....and that is key.......

Raw cane sugar is available at most any grocery store. I use Turbadino Sugar exclusively. It also makes for a much better cup of coffee. It may also be called, raw sugar. In reality it is just dried ground cane sap without the chemical processed used to remove the molasses and bleach the product. I prefer the raw, or Turbadino sugar by a factor of 1000 fold at least. Also, much much much healthier.

Not really - a lot of the "higher class" grocery stores are selling sodas without any fructose at all. Jones Cola for instance, uses no fructose. You just have to know what you are buying.

I will look into Turbadino Sugar, I have been using stevia as a sweetner.....

I hope Turbadino Sugar will prove to be equally healthful.....researching now :)

or spray-applied hormones/chemicals designed to keep fruit from ripening for sometimes months at a time...

Well, unlike stevia, raw sugar IS a major carbohydrate; so basic carbohydrate and glucose issues will be more present in raw sugar and Turbadino sugar than they are in stevia. Beyond that one issue, I'd think they are probably be 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

Oh, I don't know the dental cavity effects of stevia...

But Turbadino sugar, and especially raw sugar, is many many times healthier than processed sugar, and thousands of times healthier than fructose.

You need to ditch the sugar, of any kind. Stevia is very good for you, helps your body regulate your blood sugar, makes you feel better, has no calories and is natural. The only sugar you need should come from the fruit or fruitjuice you eat or milk. Look at sugar like crack cocaine.

I get Optimum Nutrition Natural Whey protein with Stevia, add milk and a frozen banana or two (peel before freezing) for a thick healthy "frosty"

Fruits are sweet, but loaded with Potassium. Sugar is sweeter, loaded with nothing but speed, burns you out, makes you week, tired, and irritable. It'll turn you into a neocon.

You about 4 times as much potassium as sodium, so if you eat much processed food and sodium salt you need a ton of potassium. Fruits are very healthy.

Florida Crystals is another unrefined sugar you can use. Also Brown Rice Syrup is actually better than honey because it breaks down more slowly in your system.

The above website has sme GREAT HEALTHFUL recipes that taste good. As Christina Pirello, author of several cookbooks whose recipes these are says in one of her cookbooks that I have, they are "killer desserts that won't kill you" ....and they really are! They take a little while to make but they are worth it!

Also at that site you can listen to her story about how when she was in her 20's she was diagnosed with cancer with only 6 months to live and decided she did NOT want to do ANY conventional treatment. Instead she completely got rid of her cancer with diet alone -- a macrobiotic diet that she learned about from Michio Kushi.

It is a great site and there are TONS of great FREE recipes.

Why not just cut it out of your diet altogether? The only sugars you need to put into your body are the ones produced naturally by fruits.

Yeah. It's actually not that difficult to find a product without high fructose corn syrup.

I think I'll stick with stevia......

Haven't had one dental problem since the switch (about 5 years ago).......

And the american diet is already bombarded with carbohydrates.......

I sure wish stevia could be used as a sweetner in beverages instead of being blocked by the aspartame and sucralose makers via the FDA and political appointments and contributions....

sshhhh....don't tell ANYONE what I'm about to tell you - there's a cola, called ZEVIA, made with stevia - I get it at some local "higher end" grocery stores -

here's what the can says:

the world's only all natural sugar free alternative to diet soa. Refreshing Zevia contains stevia, an herb from the rainforest known for centuries as "sweet Leaf".

Check out Zevia.com to learn why Zevia is healthier and tastes better than diet soda. Chill & Enjoy!

100% all natural

No artificial sweeteners or preservatives

Sugar Free

Caffeine Free

Contains Stevia

There are 3 flavors - Cola, Twist (like a lemon/lime flavor) and Orange -

It's good stuff although a little spendy - I thnk I pay $4.99 a 6 pack but I love it!
