In 1967, while showing off or playing a joke with his afterburners while in the cockpit of his plane parked
on the aircraft carrier deck of the USS Forrestal, his plane caught fire and burned for quite some time -
McCain eventually jumped off the plane and on to the carrier deck and made it to sickbay, but soon the bombs exploded shooting all over the place with scrapnel started flying all over.

I have heard different accounts of how many sailors lost their lives tragically, but the aircraft carrier tower video/ film recorder footage has the whole thing from the beginning fire which clearly started in McCain's A-4E Skyhawk.





So "Johnny" McCain HAS done plenty - he has the experience ya' know . . .

He's a bona fide U.S. citizen but born on foreign soil and a regular class clown -
but an "American hero" we should be proud of ?

It was just about 10:50 a.m. (local time). The launch that was scheduled for a short time later was never made. Lt. Cmdr. John S. McCain III, later a prisoner of war in Vietnam and still later U.S. Senator from Arizona, said later he heard a "whooshy" sound then a "low-order explosion" in front of him. Suddenly, two A-4s ahead of his plane were engulfed in flaming jet fuel — JP-5 — spewed from them. A bomb dropped to the deck and rolled about six feet and came to rest in a pool of burning fuel.

The awful conflagration, which was to leave 132 Forrestal crewmen dead, 62 more injured and two missing and presumed dead, had begun. The entire nation felt the tragedy, and Life magazine reported that "in five minutes, everyone became a man." The ship returned to Norfolk for extensive repairs.

McCain hit his afterburner with an aircraft right behind him. The pilot of that aircraft didn't like him any more than we do. A missile came off that aircraft, officially accidentally, and hit McCain's aircraft. McCain's aircraft dropped it's ordinance on the deck of the ship and McCain bailed.

I hate to pop your bubble, but I was on the oriskany, two miles away when that fire started. All the reports at that time pointed to the accidental firing of a missile, which hit McCain's aircraft. I have never read or heard of any reports to the contrary.

A fire at sea is nothing to laugh at.... Aircraft carriers are especially dangerous. The Oriskany lost 144 men to a fire the previous year.

To claim that a pilot would intentionally fire his missile on a crowded flight desk is simply unbelievable.

I heard on the radio that McCain did what was called a "wet start" of the engine, which to my amateur understanding, meant that fuel was pumped into the combustion chamber of the engine without igniting it right then, then when somewhat flooded, it was ignited which produced a fireball behind the jet. It was something that the jet jocks did as a prank. That somehow caused a missile from behind McCain to launch -- whether from some defect in the missile launch system, or from a startled reaction of a human, or whatever.

The point being, that if McCain hadn't been jerking around, the accident wouldn't have occurred. The program also stated that there wasn't much doubt about the fault by the crew.... McCain was evacuated with the wounded in a forced immediate transfer even though any wounds he might have had were minor. Probably done to keep the crew from tearing him apart.

I saw the video of it a few years ago. I recall something either firing out of or rolling out of and blowing up under McCain's jet.

McCain's jet was a on fire like CRAZY in the video. Somehow he opened the cockpit and rolled out and a butch of guys got the fire off him, and started dealing with the plane.

Only then his plane started blowing up or shooting missile or something and all hell broke loses and they lost like 200 more jets.


errr that's not a very good recollection of it but that's what I recall seeing. It's probably on youtube.
