HARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Wolf announced new COVID-19-mitigation efforts Thursday that ban the play of high school sports for three weeks, indoor dining and restricts retail businesses to 50% capacity.
The restrictions, which go into effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday and last through 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, are as follows:
• Extracurricular activities at schools will be suspended, including all tournaments and practices.
• No more than 10 people at indoor gatherings and events
• No more than 50 people at outdoor gatherings and events
• Indoor dining at restaurants is suspended, takeout and outdoor dining options permitted
• Indoor operations at theaters, concerts, movies, arcades, casinos, bowling alleys, private clubs and all entertainment or social clubs, gyms and other fitness facilities are suspended
• Indoor retail businesses may operate at 50% capacity.
The announcement was made during a 4 p.m. press conference that included comments from Wolf, health secretary Dr. Rachel Levine and Geisinger President and CEO Dr. Jaewon Ryu.
"We need to take further mitigation actions to stop the spread of COVID-19," Wolf said. "We all hoped it would not come to this. The current state of surge will not allow us to wait. We need to slow the spread right now in order to save lives."
