Ok, I get that, and that's a whole 'nother debate.
...but what about those that can't pay anything on the 1st because they're out of work through no fault of their own? As stated in the article, many states do this and other functions of child support completely automatically now.
The payee's income is taken before they ever see it. If there is no income to take, the process is now automatically started:
First, your driver's license is usually suspended. No better way to collect child support than to deprive the person a mode of transportation to get to work and God help ya if you use your vehicle for work, amirite?
After this happens, you also cannot obtain a fishing or hunting license. Yep-not only can you possibly not get to work, but you aren't feeding yourself like this, either.
Or a firearm. Self defense? Nah, you're the equivalent of a Felon now.
I'm not 100% if this is across the board, but I know for a fact it's the law in the state of Colorado and learned all of this while waiting for the 4473 to go through when I bought my last pistol 3 months ago and making small talk with the clerk.
I'm glad I did my "child support" as a legal contract with my ex and not having the state involved in any way, precisely to protect me in times like this. The state doesn't take anything from me, I just direct deposit into a joint checking account we maintain explicitly for that purpose.
Does anybody here know anyone that has this issue looming?
"The only administrative offset that will be enforced applies to those who have past due child support payments that the states have reported to the Treasury Department," he continued.
In other words, Americans who are overdue on child support could see their cash payments reduced or eliminated.
