A New Jersey eye doctor is accusing an off-duty NYPD detective and his two buddies of pummeling him after they mistook him for a flasher as he walked to a Fire Island synagogue.
David Campeas, a New Jersey ophthalmologist, says the cop and his pals spewed anti-gay epithets, slammed him to the ground and threatened to drown him Saturday.
The doctor was freed only after two young girls who said someone flashed them told cops he wasn't the culprit.
"You couldn't reason with them," said Campeas, 52, a father of three. "They were yelling and screaming and whacking me in the head."
Detective Arthur Molnar denied beating Campeas and insisted he was only trying to investigate the original flashing incident.
"Nobody touched anybody that night," Molnar, who works on the warrants squad, said outside his Long Island home. "You should be interviewing the guy who [exposed himself] in front of two 9-year-olds."
Suffolk County police refused to comment on Campeas' accusations, saying only that they are investigating the original flashing incident.
The NYPD confirmed that Molnar reported the incident with Campeas. The detective remains on active duty.
Campeas, who was staying at his family's home for the weekend, said he was on his way to Saturday night services when three screaming men came running at him near Atlantique.
Molnar identified himself as an NYPD officer and ordered him to get on the ground, Campeas said.
Campeas refused to lie down, telling the men he wanted to wait until uniformed police arrived.
The trio slammed him to the ground and frisked him, Campeas said. They slapped his head, hurled anti-gay insults and accused him of exposing himself to the two young girls on the beach, he said.
The men dragged him down the desolate beach, telling him they planned to parade him in front of the flashing victims, he said.
When they got close to the water, Campeas said he started fearing for his life - and they started scuffling.
Just then, Suffolk cops arrived and took Campeas into custody. He was freed after the girls said he wasn't the flasher, he said.
Campeas, who was treated for bruises at South Side Hospital, said the cops tried to discourage him from taking legal action.
Campeas insisted on pressing charges and filing a police report.
The doctor said he is now afraid of being attacked again if he returns to his family's vacation house.
"If I had resisted those three guys, I'd probably be dead or in a coma right now," he said. "I think my life has changed when you can't take a walk on the beach."
