I've been getting alot of e-mails and messages from people asking if I have copies of my vids in high res. I Guess alot of people want to put them onto dvd's or something But my DVR went tits-up about 2 days before the first debate. So all the vids I have made had the debate footage and interviews ripped directly from youtube. If anyone knows someone that has high res footage I'd be more than happy to "re-do" the video's so they can be ditributed out, and people could watch them on thier tv without it being pixilated.

Okay, this is a really stupid question, but how does one record "high res footage" off television appearances?

I have a dvd/vcr combo thingee that I bought about a year ago. It's a Panasonic piece of equipment. I know how to put in a dvd and make it play on the television and that's all. I know there are instructions around here somewhere, but I've not read them. :o

Would it help if I were to try to learn how to use the record feature?

How to Rip from Youtube?

How do you rip videos from Youtube? I don't need high res, Windows Media or Real Player formats would be great if someone could post them on an FTP site.

A few quick answers:

Good recordings off TV are hi-res compared to downloading off youtube. VCRs need to be in good shape.

HL- There are several ways. I use FireFox with a videodownloader.net plug-in, gets youtube and Google video. Rename saved file to end with .flv -- then use a program called SUPER to convert to mpeg or wmv.

Rather than an FTP, we can set up some BitTorrents.

right, if anyone has anything recorded off of the tv as opposed to youtube, make a torrent and slap it on mininova.org or something. This would help everyone emmensly, so many people are trying to ahold of footage to release dvd's at demonstrations. If it was all uploaded into the torrent networks, then everyone nationwide could get them on-demand.

Can you recommend a good primer for those of us that are less video savvy than you to read up on how to make a torrent and what torrent networks are? It might be helpful for lots of us to take these videos and distribute them to those who might not go to YouTube.

Ok, here is where I downloaded it from. It's not a perfect copy. It has some interlacing artifacts, but it is far better than youtube. I am also seeding it right now. If you have an FTP server, or something else I could send it to you directly. Here is the mininova URL:

Torrents are very easy. There are multiple platforms that all do the same thing. I use Utorrent because it's a little bit more advanced than some, but not so complicated it screws with your head. go to bittorrent.com. Torrents are great for broadband users because you can upload/download extremly fast without sacrificing your bandwidth.

Basically what you do is download a torrent client. And there are many. The easiest one would be Bittorrent . There is an option to "make a torrent" or "create a torrent". Do that, select the video you want to upload, and it creats a very small torrent file. You then go on a torrent website like Mininova.org, I think even Bittorrent.com has a place to upload torrents. Upload the torrent file you just created, and leave bittorrent running in the backround. Then post the link to the torrent here. Once people start to download, it downloads faster for everyone. The way it works is like this....

When you download a torrent, you arn't downloading the same fragemnt of the torrent file that everyone else is. Additionally you arn't uploading the same fragment either. This means that the everyone "seeds" a different part of the file, rather than doing it form start to finish. It allows the downloader to pull all portion of the file at once. But remember, you Have to upload, thats jjust the way it works.

I've acheived download speeds of over 200kbs, downloading full Divx quality movies in just shy of 2 hours. To make it work we would need several people seeding it at first, and then spread the word out to the rest of the grassroots people. Even with 20 people seeding it you can still generate speeds upwards of 100-150 kbs, and since these are mostly 10 minute clips, you could probably snag them in 10-15 mintues each.

I'm sure that the grassroots people have a nerd or two in thier midst that know how to do it. And if not, tell them to just ask thier teenage son.
