Friends of Liberty,

I just received your mailing calling for my renewal of membership with the TLP. I was extremely disappointed to read your stance on the Ron Paul 2008 Presidential Campaign. Although some of Dr. Paul’s views are not perfectly libertarian in nature, I feel that he backs up his positions with the Constitution, which without, we would be closer to anarchists than libertarians. Besides, distancing the party from Dr. Paul is the proverbial throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Specific issues aside, Dr. Paul is the most principled, honest man in politics, and it is this integrity which helps him stand apart in the 2008 race which is allowing his campaign to bring the message of liberty to Americans of every creed.

Your use of the fact that Dr. Paul isn’t a frontrunner candidate as your reason for not supporting him would be funny if it wasn’t so hypocritical. Libertarians are famous for supporting candidates that have slim chances of winning, they are called Libertarians. How will Dr. Paul ever gain support if his ideological base forsakes him (specifically the base in his home state!)? Secondly, you emphasize Dr. Paul’s affiliation with the Republican Party as substantiation for your lack of support, when it is well known that the Dr. holds allegiance only to the Constitution and the ideals of Liberty, not to a political party. I think it is time Libertarians start thinking the same way.

Sincerely,
Michael Holt

great letter. what's important is getting libertarian minded candidates elected, regardless of the letter next to their name.
