My father just passed off RP as "whack-job"...

I showed him the slimjim and talking points pdf flyers but he says RP is too "ultra conservative". My dad is a "middle of the road" type of guy so should I keep trying?

Keep trying. My dad is an oldfashioned hardcore straight ticket democrat, but he says that if Ron can make it to the general election and it's between himself and either Hillary or Obama then he'll vote for Ron Paul! Keep trying man I know what you're up against.

Go for those easy to reach first. We can always come back to those on the fence later, after we have reaced those that are looking for Ron Paul, but don't know it yet. There are millions out there that will agree with Dr. Paul's platform, and many of them will donate and join meetup groups. First, we have to get his name out there.

My advice, just leave the literature for him and let him make his own decisions. There are just some people you can't convince and if you try to "shove it down his throat" it's going to make him resent you for it. I've learned this from experience. My dad is kind of the same way. When I asked who he was going to vote for in the primaries, he said, "No one, what's the point? My vote won't make any difference." I gave up.

Keep trying. Pick out a good speech... maybe the one from Google and see if he'll listen to it. :)

The only thing I know that Dr. Paul is "ultra" about is liberty.

Ask him, what is Ron Paul "conserving"? The answer is: the US Republic, and the Constitution. The Constitution is a liberal document, designed to protect civil liberty, that is all. It is a contract between us and the government, to hamstring IT and protect US.

That's the "middle of the road" position, the only true American position. The dialog should not be about how we split up the spoils of taxation or how we apply the force of government, but how we can protect individual freedom and be an example of liberalism to the entire world.

I say keep working on him but not too forcefully.

My father was a hard core Hillary supporter a few months ago. Now it seems like he may be coming around. He was over for dinner last week. I asked him if he had heard or read Ron Paul's speech on patriotism. He hadn't. I printed him a copy. he started reading it and took it home to finish.

I think that the issue that really began to wake my father up was the Iraq war. He's been against it from the beginning. I compared Hillary's changing stances on the war to Ron Paul's consistent stance. That issue piqued my father's curiosity. Now it seems like he wants to learn more.

There is still hope.

I agree with this philosophy. Try to know your audience and then give your best "targeted" pitch. If that doesn't sell the person, then move on. Don't write them off and certainly don't get angry with them. There are just SO MANY people who Ron Paul will appeal to once they know who he is that we can't afford to waste any time.

I think I can sell him on the Iraq War and non-interventionist foreign policy. I need some good stuff in that category.

My dad also thinks that RP is a 'nutjob'.
I think the slimjim is really conservative and should only be used on GOP members. Not on moderates or liberals

The campaign really needs a Conservative Slimjim and a Liberal SlimJim.

He appeals to both - but if you only see one small snapshot you might not realize that.

I think the best way to convince friends and family is to have them see how much effort you put into this campaign. If you're too busy going door to door to go hang out with them or can't go to a ballgame/concert because you donated your paycheck they'll be intrigued. If they ask you why you just give them a very short, general answer (no longer than say, "He's the only candidate who wants to protect my liberties, end illegal immigration, and greatly reduce spending/taxation"). They'll likely look Ron Paul up for the specifics. And then they'll bring him up with you and you'll (hopefully) be able to answer their specific questions about him (and likely his chances).

But anyway, you've got plenty of time to convert your friends and family. I'm sure subjects like illegal immigration, the economy, and taxes come up from time to time. If you can explain to them your views (hopefully coinciding with RP's) they will automatically make the connection to RP and as long as you don't mention his name, they won't feel like you're promoting him.

The more you push him on someone, the more they will push back.

Folks I am a 54 year old grandmother from a 100% blue collar life long, generations long, democratic extended family. I found out about Dr. Paul 2 to 3 months ago and got hooked. What did it for me was the patriot act. Period. I believe if this patriot act becomes entrenched, as in Dr. Paul does not win this election, the country as my parents thought they gave to me and I thought I was passing on will not exist in a matter of a few years. When I told my extended family of wire taps, national ID cards, chipping the kids, the Amero, the super highway, the loss of habeus corpus, ect ect. They at first thought I had lost it, understandably. After all they are part of the Greatest Generation. But they are certainlly not part of what is coming. Now they know and I believe I can add 20 or so newly registered republicans to our families growing list of Ron Paul supporters. So Starks explain the patriot act to your father and ask him if that is what he wants for you and your children. Its turning my whole extended family around. Good luck Ann

That's a great story! I've got family members who are Dems, Repubs, and independents on the Paul campaign. I think the best approach is to find out what the person cares about then to focus on that rather than listing all of Paul's positions which may turn them off

For a lot of young people, the War in Iraq is a big issue. I'm made many college converts with the War in Iraq, regulation of the internet, and the Patriot Act

Yeah, going door to door anywhere in New York is pointless.

Ask him to watch fiat empire - 59 minutes

http://www.buchanan.org/blog/ - scroll down to fiat empire.

Then explain that is why two incomes are needed now(generally) to get by, thats why college cost 100k, housing is expensive and everything else. Your dads generation voted in a bunch of counterfieters, spending money all over the world for special interest and inside the USA. Ask him to tell you why gas doubled? If he says demand from China tell him the truth, thats a very small part, its 75% because the USA is devaluing the middle class buying power. Ask him if his youngest child fresh out of college and 50k or more in debt, now ready to marry his sweetheart and move into a 300k starter home has a real shot? Like back when he did? Or last resort, ask him why his 5.00 bottle of pills is now 60.00 only 15 years later? They all get that? Then tell him CNN and FOX are controlled by the military industrial complex and thats why you get 24/7 Paris Hilton and no real news anymore. O'reilly body language expert? Lesbian gangs with pink pistols? All while our young soldiers and many of our non citizens fighting for us in a US uniform are getting slaughtered acting as police instead of fighting machines. I think your dad has been OUT"FOX"ed and spoonfed propaganda, just a guess. Make him watch FIAT Empire before he votes, thats 59 minutes out of his life he can devote to you!

What do you mean? I went to a couple thousand doors in upstate NY a few years ago getting people registered to vote and was able to register over 400 (and many were already registered). If you could get a similar 20% return (people looking into RP), you would be increasing polling %'s, contributions, buzz, and most importantly, primary votes for RP. Also, actions like these work like force multipliers. If he comes up in conversation or in the media the person will perk their ears up thinking "That's the guy that Starks fellow supports."

FWIW, I have steered more people over to RP's side by asking them to watch a speech given by another person. It's posted here on the forum and it's awesome. It's the speech given by Andrew Napolitano.

My dad is also a "middle of the road" kind of guy. He also has a lot of common sense. Whenever I open my mouth and speak about how things ought to be, he has no choice but to agree with me. In other words, he knows I'm right.

By the way, he will be voting for Ron Paul.
