Elon Musk claims to have found rampant fraud in the Social Security Administration. There's a much simpler explanation

The top official at the Social Security Administration stepped down this weekend after members of Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency sought access to sensitive personal data about millions of Americans held by the agency, according to people familiar with the matter.

"The resignation of Michelle King, the acting commissioner, is the latest abrupt departure of a senior federal official who refused to provide Mr. Musk’s lieutenants with access to closely held data."

"An audit produced by the Social Security Administration’s inspector general last year found that from 2015 to 2022, the agency paid almost $8.6 trillion in benefits and made approximately $71.8 billion, or less than 1 percent, in improper payments that usually involved recipients getting too much money.

Mr. Musk’s team at the Social Security Administration was seeking access to an internal data repository that contains extensive personal information about Americans, according two people familiar with the matter,"

Read them before you (plural) believe at face value what Musk is saying.
He is not even an American. Do you want all Americans personal data to be surveiled and controlled by him and his network?
The programming is in COBOL. It is secured by the government. It is not online. It is internal and secure.
This was all happening in Trump's first term also, and the articles describe why it's not what we're being led to believe.

So you're fine with everyone at SSA having access to that information but somehow it's a problem when Elon's team has access to it? :monocle:

Thanks to Elon Musk we saw the Fraud that USAID was and all the billions, millions where it went and how it went.
USAID Got exposed.

Would you prefer an American who would have likely continued to cover up for USAID?

The article that you posted is just you know from NY Times..

This person is far enough out of touch that they think $71.8 billion isn't very much.

lol even the trolls are getting nervous now. Soon Musk will find the honeypot and the whole game is over for a lot of people.

The head of the agency stepping down after 30 years of unquestioned power says more about her fear of what they are going to find than her feigned outrage about the data being in Musk’s hands. If there’s nothing to fear then there’s nothing to hide.

Elon Musk claims to have found rampant fraud in the Social Security Administration. There's a much simpler explanation

The New York Post has a similar story:
Elon Musk ‘uncovers’ 20M in Social Security database over age 100 — here’s why they’re listed and don’t get benefits
The same inspector general’s office found in a March 2015 audit that 6.5 million people with Social Security numbers but no death information were over 112 years old — despite just 35 people on the planet having reached that ripe old age.

In both audits, the inspectors general concluded that “almost none” were actually cashing Social Security checks — despite the glaring accounting errors identifying people born in 1886 and 1893 as still living, in two extreme cases.

Roughly 18.4 million uncovered in the 2023 audit had not received benefits or reported income for 50 years, meaning they were likely dead.

“We believe it likely SSA did not receive or record most of the 18.9 million individuals’ death information primarily because the individuals died decades ago — before the use of electronic death reporting,” the report states.

Around 44,000 were actually receiving benefits, with 13 of those older than 112.
...
...
The audits, however, did reveal that around 531 million unique Social Security numbers are in circulation — and that “thousands” may be in use to commit identity fraud.

The 2015 audit showed about $3.1 billion in earnings reported by employers or self-employed individuals who were not the actual Social Security number holder.

Alex Nowrasteh, Cato Institute vice president for economic and social policy studies, replied to Musk’s tweet by noting that a lot of Social Security numbers for people older than age 100 were “illegal immigrants paying in, not fraudulent recipients taking out.”

“By all means, clean up SSA and mark those people as deceased. But the cost of doing so is less revenue going into Social Security,” Nowrasteh said. “Maybe that’s fine, SS should be shut down anyway, but that is a downside.”
...
...
“Some people have more than one number, occasionally because they’re committing fraud, but more usually because they’ve had fraud committed against them and they were issued a new clean number,” a former SSA employee told journalist Jesse Singal.

“[A]lso you have people who received a Social Security number and then left the US, like temporary immigrant workers,” the employee added. “But there’s a long term recognized problem with SSA’s databases not marking as dead people who have died.”

You fell for the stupid COBOL error BS?

Sorry, dude, but Elon Musk is actually 1000 times smarter than you think you are.

They aren't all 150 years old.. they are between 100 - 200+ years old.

I wonder how many posters on this forum receive USAID?

In his tweet, Musk disclosed that it's 10,000,000 people over 120 receiving money...

I get what OPs saying in terms of data mining but I would imagine that would be some kind of a violation.

A LOT of good has come out of this.

I cant even understand how they would know they sent too much money. If they knew why didnt they adjust it ? Must be arrears or something , most should always be same amount

COBOL isn't this only issue. There's also the case of people dying and not properly being reported. But Social Security has a failsafe to quit sending out payments to people unlikely to still be alive.

https://oig.ssa.gov/assets/uploads/a-06-21-51022.pdf

However, when a deceased numberholder’s Numident record does not contain death
information, the numberholder’s information does not appear in the DMF. As a result, DMF
users would not know these individuals are deceased. Further, in December 2023, SSA is
required to begin providing the Department of the Treasury with the full DMF to support
Treasury’s Do Not Pay Initiative. Millions of deceased numberholders’ information missing from
the DMF could result in erroneous payments by Federal benefit-paying agencies that use the
DMF to detect inaccurate or unreported deaths. The missing information can also hinder private
industry as well as state and local governments’ ability to use the DMF to prevent identity fraud.

read the artices. not true.

anyway he gutted the CFPB for his own sake and now is going for Medicaid and the FAA.

He's making 8 million a day with long-lasting benefits.

I'm sus. Very sus. It's not fraud to disagree with policies put in the budget, anymore than its fraud when the Pentagon or Black Ops
don't audit because they NEVER had to audit. What I do know is that he's a technocrat globalist with ambitions that go back generations
in his family, even the X was his grandfathers. The people's government is there to protect the rights of the people. For us, By us.

Just be wise. The same who cries about spending in some areas wants us to build a drone fleet and AI Stargate.

I do know that is is better to have an inefficient enemy that respects your rights than an efficient one which does not.

Not a fan. Seen too much. Eyes Wide Open.
