wanted to mention RP but felt this may be better w/o this.....
2nd letter http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/375178_ltrs17.html
i wrote this in five minutes w/a beer buzz, so it could have been better. i encourage all to do similar (only sober
)
GEORGIA AND RUSSIA
U.S. involvement should be condemnation only (the papers subtitle, not mine)
Once again the U.S. is meddling in the affairs of a foreign country. The conflict between Georgia and Russia should be viewed as a "regional" war and U.S. involvement should entail nothing more than a superficial "condemnation" (and I would argue that even this is inappropriate).
That the U.S. already has become involved transporting Georgian troops from Iraq to the front lines of this new war should come as no surprise to many political observers. The U.S. has given much military and economic aid to this country. The response from Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was predictable as well: "It is a shame that some of our partners are not helping us but, essentially, are hindering us," he said.
This regional conflict should be avoided as the outcome plays no vital role for the U.S. The U.S. cannot afford to continue to serve as the policemen of the world, nor is it morally or ethically legitimate to do so.
It is past time to end the empire building of the past half-century before this country becomes bankrupt (more than $1 trillion is spent annually to maintain this empire). More important to the safety of U.S. citizens, we will be better served by not stirring up international hornets-nests as this meddling will result inevitably in "blowback." And we don't need to experience that again.
