I went on a pre-march excursion to DC this past weekend and saw all the sites. I know the metro pretty well, I know good places to drink, and I would be happy to give some advice to anyone interested.
Getting around DC: If you haven't booked your hotel yet try to book within the area covered by the DC metro (it also runs into Virgina and Maryland). When you get there buy yourself what's called a SmarTrip card - it is very quick and works on both subway and buses. I don't advise taking a cab nor renting a car at any time in DC - you don't need it. PS If you fly in you can take a bus or subway from the airports to DC proper quite easily.
Here is a map of the stops of the subway system:

Booking your hotel: Book a four star on priceline! My experience with it was great. Pick Dupont Circle or surrounding areas, choose four star minimum, then just bid VERY low ($65 maybe) and gradually raise your bid by $5 -$10 bucks until it's accepted. Then call the hotel that accepts your bid and ask for double beds so you can have another revolutionary friend or five pay their share. Also check out the hotel's website. I stayed at the Omni and signed up for a "Preferred Guest" program free on their website that got me free wifi access, express check in/out, a morning paper every day, and other perks.
