Just came back from Washington - Here's a Debriefing for Revolutionaries

I went on a pre-march excursion to DC this past weekend and saw all the sites. I know the metro pretty well, I know good places to drink, and I would be happy to give some advice to anyone interested.

Getting around DC: If you haven't booked your hotel yet try to book within the area covered by the DC metro (it also runs into Virgina and Maryland). When you get there buy yourself what's called a SmarTrip card - it is very quick and works on both subway and buses. I don't advise taking a cab nor renting a car at any time in DC - you don't need it. PS If you fly in you can take a bus or subway from the airports to DC proper quite easily.

Here is a map of the stops of the subway system:

Booking your hotel: Book a four star on priceline! My experience with it was great. Pick Dupont Circle or surrounding areas, choose four star minimum, then just bid VERY low ($65 maybe) and gradually raise your bid by $5 -$10 bucks until it's accepted. Then call the hotel that accepts your bid and ask for double beds so you can have another revolutionary friend or five pay their share. Also check out the hotel's website. I stayed at the Omni and signed up for a "Preferred Guest" program free on their website that got me free wifi access, express check in/out, a morning paper every day, and other perks.

Makes sense. Any inside tips around the Crystal City area?

I can recommend a couple Indian food places by the Omni that have CHEAP ($10 60oz pitcher of margarita) drinks.

FYI anyone who doesn't know Dupont circle seemed to be a nice shopping/hang out area with a big park in the middle of a large roundabout with streets stretching out in every direction.

Haha! All I know is it was good and a pitcher will set most groups of two people with a light buzz for a couple hours. Also seemed like pretty safe area to walk around at night. People were walking significant distance home around 1 am in groups without incident as far as I could see.

BTW everyone - if you want to go inside the capitol building it's easy... Go early in the morning and get a tour pass (very short tour, but decent photo ops). You can also just go to your state senator's office and ask for a pass to see the senate/house in session (and a tour of the capitol if available).

Don't forget to see the Smithsonian Museums if you can. I personally recommend the Museum of American History!!

Also - Check out the Library Of Congress...

I'm not sure how long it will be there, but they have a Thomas Jefferson collection there right now and it will really inspire any Ron Paul Revolutionary.

Thanks Liberty inJeopardy. Does the above apply to women travelling alone and on a shoestring? I heard DC was rather a murderous place. I've got my Lonely Planet guide but extra tips would be appreciated. Great to see the map of the metro.

The Library of Congress is awesome; worth a visit

You mean as far as being safe? I'd recommend pairing up, not necessarily because it's DC - but because 1) it's safer with friends, 2) it's more fun too.
