Lil, Dary and I are ready to get started on a sign campaign for us here is Jax, perhaps an overnight one like the one in Memphis. (For anyone who didn't catch he video Lil sent out, the link is http://youtube.com/watch?v=FFSCXIffv1s)

First, I want to see who wants to work with us to do this. But before that, I was hoping someone might be able to provide some insight regarding the laws on this sort of thing. We certainly don't want to break any laws, or generate any negative attention.

So here is the link Lil sent me regarding. Perhaps someone can help me decipher it.

Help me out!

Wow! Way to go Memphis.

We need to do one better here in Jax!

Count me in - Who wants to take the lead on this project?

we should take the high rode

If you ask me signs with people dedicated enough to hold them are great. Signs left on the public right of way are illegal, eventually they resemble litter, and it demonstrates you are going for the uneducated vote or you think people just vote for the person with the most signs. We should place ourselves above that. If you want publicity find creative new ways to get it.

Its also high time to change the perception that the guy with the most money wins. (lots of people should win)

what about having some people with signs the first work day the Mathews bridge is open again.

I'm definitely willing to lead this project, I know Lil is all for it as well.

John, what do you think about what Dave commented?

It's kind of a tough choice. Dary mentioned that perhaps we should weigh the consequences against our goals, and if our goals are to get Ron Paul elected, than it would be a chance he'd be willing to take, and on that note I agree, but I would like to hear everyone's thoughts.

I also contacted the Memphis group to see if they had any insight as to laws, and how they overcame them... still waiting to hear back...

I agree that is certainly better to have people with the signs than without - but if we don't have the people let's at least get the signs up. I would really like to hang one of those huge banners on an I-95 Overpass. Think of how many people that would reach.

And thanks for taking the lead on this one!

I'm with Dary. The worst that can happen at first is that the signs are removed. We'll find out pretty quickly what we can and can't do. :D

Let's move forward.

Nick - the Orlando Meetup Organizer is coming up this Friday and said he could bring the following:

Let me know if you want me to bring some stuff up. I have to sell it at $6 for shirts ($1 extra for XL), $5 for signs (plastic with official campaign layout).

That sounds awesome... I just heard back from the Memphis group and here is what they had to say.

"Hi! My name is Jason, AKA webmaster for the area ;) I know I can speak
for our entire group when I say that we're ecstatic that you've been
inspired by our efforts. That and getting Ron Paul's name out in the
open were in fact our main goals. Anyways, to answer your questions,
we only had a few run-ins with the police, but being that they had no
clue that we were an organized group all across the city, the worst we
got was a slap on the wrist and told to take it back down. We had
actually spoken with a lawyer and a few cops before hand regarding
what the law was and what we generally got was that as long as we did
not impose danger to drivers (like blocking views or hanging them
directly over traffic such that falling could pose a danger) that
there was not much of anything against the law. Sure, some over
zealous neo-con cop could trump up some charge, but that was the
chance we took. It did not happen though, so it worked out well. That
said however, we did avoid some of the overly conservative suburbs
where the police were a little more guaranteed to cause problems, but
the city of Memphis I can promise has much larger problems than a few
political activists hanging banners. I'd be willing to bet the same
goes for Jacksonville, but I would recommend checking on that
beforehand.

Now all that said, a few recommendations should you try something
similar... The banners are very susceptible to wind (especially ones
hung from overpasses). Our best successes came from ones hung on
fences where all four corners could be fastened. Also, make sure that
you fold the tyvek one to two inches along the top and bottom before
putting in the grommets as this prevents them from tearing. For
locations where you'd be compelled to hang them by the top two
corners, I would also suggest that you insert something through the
bottom folds like a wooden dowel such that the corners cannot flap
independently as they very easily will.

And finally I reiterate, PLEASE be safe in whatever you do and be
careful not to inadvertently endanger traffic (as in any bridge
banners being hung over medians or emergency lanes;) Other than safety
I wish you the best and look forward to hearing back about how it
goes. Make some good videos too as they always help to inspire others.
Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions.

Jason Williams"

I'm stoked!

That is Great!

I think there is a fenced in "walking" overpass above I-95 between University & Emerson. That might be the perfect one to do because we could securely tie all 4 corners to the fence.

I'm up for supporting this effort, but only if we can get them posted all around town. I-95 overpasses would be great -- especially the one at St. Augustine Rd. that says "Jacksonville" in huge backlit letters. For that one, we should do the "Ron Paul Revolution" sign but add the word "in" to the end, so that it reads "Ron Paul Revolution in... Jacksonville"! We may want to do the sign posting effort more than once also, being that we're still a few months away from the primaries.

Yeah that would be even better if we can pull it off.

There really isn't a whole hell of a lot of overpasses in Jacksonville, probably because of the high water table.

I was looking on Google earth and from what I could see, there is the St. Augustine overpass, the Greenland road overpass, and there are 2 on I-10, and there is also that fenced in "walking" overpass above I-95 between University & Emerson that JS4Pat mentioned. There may be a couple more that I missed and even more yet depending on how far out we want to go.

However, putting banners on overpasses gives me the willies. I keep picturing in my head one of them coming loose and causing a major accident.

If we are going to do overpasses then we need to make sure that the banner can hang far enough away from traffic so as not to cause an accident if it should come loose, yet in a position where it could still be seen.

There is a fence (actually 2 fences) on Greenland and 1 where a banner would go nicely.
There is a fence on 1 and 9A where one would go well.
There is a fence at Old St. Augustine Rd just south of 295 by the Walgreens near Lowes where one would fit.

It would be nice if we could identify locations before we go out so we are not just driving around looking for locations. If you see any while you're out a about, keep a mental note and lets make a list.

I mentioned to Athena that I purchased a roll of 165' x 3'of Tyvek, some spray paint, grommets and tie downs.

The supplies cost roughly $110.

I'm about 3/4 of the way done with a stencil.

Yeah, we will definitely have it all planned out thoroughly before we head out. We should all just start make conscious efforts to look around when we are out driving. Should we make smaller signs too, like the wooden(?) ones they have in the video for just random places?

We are going to need a good portion of the group to participate also, so that we can cover as much area as possible...

I did that on my drive into work this morning. :)

The I-95 Overpass between University and Emerson might not work becuase there is no way to "safely" get the banner on the outside of the fencing. The fencing is totally enclosed.

As far as the smaller signs - We should defintely put some on the Butler Exit off I-95. There is always congestion in the morning on the exit ramp going North onto I-95. In the evenings there is always congestion exiting onto Butler off I-95 South (at the traffic light)

I was thinking the same thing, I just wasnt sure how fine the grating on the fence is... if it still is able to show through, then we should still be able to put one there I would think...

Major intersections

I think it would be viable to post signs at major intersections around town where people actually have to stop. Examples that come to mind are JTB & Hodges, Beach & Hodges, Beach & Kernan, Kernan & Atlantic, Beach & San Pablo, Beach & A1A, Atlantic & A1A, Atlantic & Hodges, Baymeadows & Southside, Gate & Town Center, Baymeadows & 9A, Southside & Philips Hwy, etc.

I finished cutting out my stencil today.

I also painted 2 banners. The first one didn't come out that good. It will probably be ok from a distance.

The second one came out better, it is apparent that they are homemade. I think that they will be ok. It's probably good that they look a little bit homemade anyway cuz it adds to a sense of grassrootsieness. (I just made a new word).

Keep in mind that these banners are like 8 ft long by 3 ft wide. So as you're driving about be sure that if you identify a spot where one would go, that there be plenty of room to hang it.

I hope to be able to make a whole lot more of them tomorrow. It would be nice to have as many made as possible by the next meeting so I can get them into the hands of those who would care to participate in the Aug. 4th overnight. (or would the be the 3rd.?)

Speaking of which... How many would care to participate?

I would suggest that we at least go out in 2's. It's much more fun that way and probably safer too.

I did this once (or twice) when Harry Browne was running for president and we had a blast.

Has anyone else in the group purchased any of the smaller signs in bulk? If not then we need to do that too and quickly if we intend to make the Aug 3 or 4th date for the overnight.

I think that it would be a great idea if we hung a couple of these up on the "walking" overpass above I-95 between University & Emerson and had several of us there to shake some signs at the people stuck in traffic during rush hour.

That would probably take at least 4 or more of us.

o.k far enough

I have to say something again

Typical voter (TV) at a red light, I see a sign Ron Paul for President. TV thinks here is a group looking to get votes but they are already littering up the roadway and eventually I am going to have access to all the names running for President. When I get around it Tv will remember Ron Paul put out trashy signs first (and encouraged all the rest of them to turn every street into an eyesore)

Do you really think anyone says yippee its presidential election time coming again can't wait till everyone just has their name out there?

The only people that are convinced signs matter are people who sell signs.

How about meet me halfway acknowledge that no one likes the roadways filled with signs. Don't put them up and never take them back down. Put them up every Saturday (the bonus is no government workers to take them down) take them back down Sunday afternoon (and have Ron Paul gear on when you do it and take credit for being considerate) and use clever strategies around where you put them (like weekend events)
And try to mix in people waving them and handing out literature.

Or... Typical voter at a red light sees a Ron Paul banner and wonders, "hmm, I wonder who Ron Paul is." Typical voter gets home and looks up Ron Paul on the internet.

Typical voter likes what he sees and donates $2300 to Ron’s campaign, gets involved and helps spread the word before the primary comes.

Because typical voter saw the banner, contributed to the campaign and helped turn out the vote in the primary, Ron Paul goes on to win the presidency.
