Is this an attack on my civil liberty?

Today I went to trade a couple of old xbox games in for Tiger Woods Golf and was told by the store owner that I had to show my id because of pawn shop laws. This was not a pawn shop but none the less the law applied.

He said it was because if someone reported the same games stolen that I were trading in the police would have a record and I guess a suspect in me. I don't really thing this a huge deal but was curious to what others here thought

I would have no problem with it if the pawn shop did it on a voluntary basis, but to have a law about it is wrong from a civil liberty view.

I walked out of a vet's office because they wanted a photo ID of me. I'm not writing a check, VISA rules say that can't refuse to take my card just because I refuse to produce an ID, and I'm certainllt not going to commit insurance fraud because pet insurance is the biggest crock of poo there is. I see no reason to give a stupid vet a copy of my ID.

Really? At a vet's office? Wow! Were you getting a prescription or something? I can see if you were picking up some pet tranquilizers or painkillers or anything they need to regulate, then an ID might be in order, but if it was a regular checkup I see no reason for it

States very much have the right to make laws to protect the consumer. In the case of the xbox game trade, the store owner is the consumer. I would not consider this example a violation of your civil liberties. If this was a federal law, I may reconsider.

angelatc, you are absolutely correct on the VISA rules. Many people are of the misconception however that the rule precludes a merchant from asking for ID. They may ask, you may refuse but they still must complete the transaction. If they are suspicious about the transaction, the merchant can make a "Code 10" call.
