Conservatives seek promises at GOP forum

Religious and economic conservatives in Iowa joined forces Saturday to administer ideological litmus tests to several Republican presidential candidates at a political cattle show in Des Moines . . .
The significance of Saturday's candidate forum was diminished by the decision of three leading GOP contenders - Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Fred Thompson (who hasn't formally entered the race) - to not attend. It was also diminished by the decision of organizers to not allow Ron Paul to participate.[emphasis added]
(It's hard to have a very meaningful event when the party's leading candidates - and one of its leading thinkers on tax issues - won't, or can't, show up.) . . .
