ok, picture this....

you go vote.... you get a reciept..... you are able to go to an official web site that shows all votes.... you find your reciept number to verify your vote was counted.

Solved

I think it's a good idea, we just need to make sure that the candidate's name is next to the receipt number on the site.

I like the idea, but you're assuming a web-savvy crowd. So while this solution is better than we have now and would answer questions about these 0-vote precincts, it doesn't fully solve the problem.

But again, any progress is good progress.

I like it,
On another thread, it may have been your post I dunno, but there was an idea to:
Have the polling machine print out a receipt of an individual's vote after it is registered.
THEN, provide a shredder inside the booth, if you want your vote to be secret then shred, if you are worried about fraud, then keep it. Another idea would be to have a notary on hand at some of the larger precints to certify the vote reciept.

We can put a man on the moon, but counting a few hundred thousand slips of paper is simply impossible!

because a shit ton of people wont do it. it's hard enough to get people out to vote.

It wouldnt fully solve the problem but think about it....

If anyone questioned that their vote was not counted, you could simply just look. It would only take one person to prove that their was fraud.

Right now, we only have numbers to look at but we don't know who they belong too.

It's a bad idea because your vote is trackable, if done in a convenient way.

The best way to prevent vote fraud is to have the public watch as they count first how many people voted (and who should be available upon request, in case someone dead decided to come from the grave and vote), and then the actual votes, then they can report to the county clerk the results, as well as to the media, right away, in case the clerk is pulling some funny business.

This is a great idea, although not a new one. People have been fighting for this "Reciept" of each individual vote (especially since 2004).

But for some strange reason, these efforts have been blocked and states, counties, and the Diebolds of the world have Refused to comply with this very simple and Crucial request/Demand. Why?

I agree it will go along way in making them honest because the cheaters won't know how many will record their vote....it will throw a monkey wrench in their plans if it was big enough.

By the way, good first post.....I posted something similar months ago hoping so we could be ready for this now, no one was interested.

Thats the point, we want it to be trackable. Nobody would see names so it would be ok. Just numbers.

The fact that votes are NOT trackable is one of our main problems.

The only small problem I see is in the following scenario:

1. Asshole boss grudgingly lets you take 30 minutes to go vote.

2. Asshole boss is good friends with John Q. Politician, who just happens to be running for the same office as Mary Pureheart.

3. Asshole boss tells you before you leave that you need to vote for John Q. Politician when he gives you your generous 30 minutes to go vote.

4. Asshole boss demands that you show him your receipt to prove that you actually voted instead of stopping by the local bar and knocking back a quick gin and tonic before returning to work.

5. Asshole boss "connects the dots" at the web site and sees you voted for Mary Pureheart instead of John Q. Politician.

6. Asshole boss has the locks changed on your office door and frogmarches you out of the building, never to return again.

7. Asshole boss steals your stress toys and jar of M&Ms on your (former) desk.

This is an actual story - the names have been changed to protect the guilty. (It was a consulting job and I found another one within 24 hours, but I really DID lose the stress toys and jar of M&Ms).

A simple solution that makes sense.

Every voter should get a reciept that can be checked on a website if they wish to. While most people won't, that really does not matter. Having the ability to check is what is important. Then a few people would check and either find that everything is legit or they would expose fraud and others could start to check with their reciepts.

thats a bit extreme don't you think.

1. Very few people would act this way, if any.

2. Its illegal

Damn straight it was illegal. But it happened, and I lived in a "right-to-work" state at the time (where you can be fired for no reason or any reason at all). John Q. Politician just happened to be running for his second term as DA.

Someone who has a good memory could write down the number of the ballot of everyone, and then they could look them up.

yup

I don't see whats so hard about this.

Why do we have to trust people to do the right thing when we vote?

Why are we so advanced yet still rely on outdated technology?

Solved

This doesn't prevent vote fraud.

The following is how to prevent vote fraud in an age where computers are used to count ballots:

1) You go and vote
2) You get a receipt, which gives you secure voter serial number and password to log into state voter database, which lists ALL voters in a particular primary.
3) You pick a random voter to contact and the db should list their name, their serial number and the candidate they voted for.
4) You call that particular voter (you dial a central voter database check phone number, then punch in serial number of voter you want to check and then you will be transfered to their home phone line), you then identify yourself as a peer voter who is doing a check and ask them for their name, their serial number and who they voted for.

If EVERY voter follows this procedure and no one finds a discrepancy you can say you have had a fair election.

Otherwise if:

A) If you find that you are not listed, seek follow up and FLAG this event in the database
B) If you find that a voter has the wrong information on the database, seek follow up and flag this event in the database.
C) If you copy paste all voters and find that the sum does not equal the official totals, seek follow up and FLAG this event in the database.

This is how you defeat vote fraud in the 21st century. It will not matter what machine is used, this method is bullet proof, for even if
they staff a room of however many people pretending to be voters, all it takes is 2 friends checking each other to find this out.

Solved

Its a good idea. I thought of doing something similar. The only problem is people who don't have internet access or are just too lazy/stupid to follow through after voting.

I figured we might be able to have volunteers outside of each voting area with laptops and maybe wireless internet to do it for people. Maybe hook them up with a laptop and a scanner, scan receipts and record people's info. Honestly I wish something like this would have been done in Iowa but everyone was too busy scoffing at the idea of voter fraud. Again the problem with this is if people are too dumb/lazy to take the time and have their vote verified, but I think MOST ron paul voters would be willing to do this, so at least if we record 40,000 votes and the results come out showing 10,000, it will be that much more proof of fraud.

The next problem is...there is already plenty of proof of fraud. So, who's going to do something about it.
