Have you ever seen a poster that says, "A complete lack of planning on your part doesn't necessarily constitute an emergency on my part"? Well, there it is. When you are confronted by liberals who refuse to understand that the biggest problem with big government is crookedness, then move on to the other major underlying problem--motivation. If corruption doesn't do a socialist state in, a lack of motivation will.
Now, maybe they also don't understand that some people will do great things, but only if they can be an entrepreneur and never if they have to work for some middle management idiot. So, if that doesn't work either try this. Everyone has had a situation at work (if they have ever worked) where they had to clean up someone else's mess for the good of the team. The thing is, government encourages people to screw up because then they get rescued and discourages people from doing things right because they get to do the cleaning up (or, at least, pay for the clean up).
So, if getting in over your head will result in the taxpayers moving you up from a bungalow to a McMansion, what kind of fool settles for a bungalow? Can we really afford to give each man, woman and child in the U.S. a McMansion? Where do we draw the line--when we decide to stop buying McMansions for screwups, why wouldn't they scream discrimination?
You don't ever need to use the word socialism to make this argument. That'll help keep their defenses down.
