Waitresses and waiters mostly work for below-minimum wage, and are expected to make up the rest of their pay in tips.
The tips, of course, are taxed by the IRS.
I suggest printing out the Slim Jim from the Ron Paul campaign site that describes the bill introduced by Ron Paul to abolish tips on wait staff tips:

When eating out, attach a decent tip to the Slim Jim before leaving it for your waitress/waiter.
I can't think of anything more pertinent and direct than receiving money directly, and then being reminded that it's getting taxed - and being introduced to the man who wants to get rid of that tax!
