How Convenient: As States to Reopen, CDC Chief Warns of “Second Wave”
22 April 2020
Americans are ready for the country to reopen, but the forces seeking greater government control may not be willing to relinquish the pandemic crisis just yet.
The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is telling Americans that the flu season could bring with it a “second wave” of the coronavirus that would be more destructive than the current one.
In an interview with the Washington Post, CDC Director Robert Redfield (shown) urged the country to be cautious going forward — even as some states have already laid out plans to roll back lockdown measures in the coming weeks amid widespread protest against such measures by Americans concerned with government violation of constitutional rights.
Redfield said the practice of “social distancing” has had “an enormous impact” on curtailing the spread of the virus, but added that the American people should make plans to stay healthy when summer and winter come — including getting flu shots.
Getting a seasonal flu shot would seem to have nothing to do with this novel coronavirus, but Redfield said it would prevent the overburdening of America’s healthcare system should a second coronavirus wave strike.
Receiving a seasonal flu vaccine, Redfield maintained, “may allow there to be a hospital bed available for your mother or grandmother that may get coronavirus.”
Redfield went onto say that the CDC is growing its workforce in order to mitigate the effects of another coronavirus wave. The agency has plans to grow its staff by 650 across the nation to “substantially augment” its response capacities once all states lift their lockdown restrictions and citizens reenter the workforce and go back to normal life.
But he said that still more workers would be needed. The CDC, said Redfield, is considering using field workers intended for the Census Bureau, which put its operations on hold in May due to the outbreak. The agency may also utilize the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps to create “an alternative workforce.”
A number of states are working to end the quarantine policies that have wrought enormous economic devastation and led millions of Americans to file for unemployment.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said his state will enact a gradual reopening, with businesses such as gyms and hair salons allowed to resume their business at the end of this week as long as they adhere to social-distancing guidelines. Dine-in restaurants, theaters, and private clubs will be allowed to reopen beginning Monday.
“By taking this measured action, we will get Georgians back to work safely without undermining the progress that we have all made in the battle against COVID-19,” Kemp said at a press briefing.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced he would not be extending his state’s stay-at-home order, which expires on April 30. Some businesses will be allowed to get back to work as early as next Monday, while the majority will be permitted to reopen on May 1.
“For the good of our state, social distancing must continue, but our economic shutdown cannot,” Lee said.
South Carolina, Ohio, and Texas also are on their way to reopening their states, at least partially, by the end of the month. The White House has encouraged states to develop plans to do so, unveiling a set of guidelines last week titled “Opening Up America Again.”
By following the guidelines, the president said, some states would be able to open up “literally tomorrow.”
The guidelines call on state governments and employees to develop policies to ensure sanitation, virus testing, and protection for at-risk individuals, outlining three phases of gradual easing of restrictions.
“Governors will be empowered to tailor an approach that meets the diverse circumstances of their own states,” President Trump said of the guidelines. “If they need to remain closed, we will allow them to do that. If they believe it’s time to reopen, we will provide them the freedom and guidance to accomplish that task and very quickly, depending on what they want to do.”
Protests against lockdown measures have taken place throughout America. A demonstration in Dallas this week showcased the concerns expressed by protesters in other parts of the country.
Americans not only disagree with the government telling people to remain at home under threat of police action or picking and choosing what businesses may remain open — putting people out of work and making citizens dependent on welfare. They also take issue with additional freedom-violating policies governments are trying to implement under the guise of public health, such as track and trace technology, universal vaccinations, and mandatory medical ID cards.
Some U.S. law-enforcement agencies are even enforcing social-distancing mandates with drones made in China.
For those who want to destroy Americans’ liberties and create a totalitarian police state, stoking fear of a second virus wave plays right into their hand.
