A recently declassified US Army report on the biological effects of non-lethal weapons reveals outlandish plans for "ray gun" devices, which would cause artificial fevers or beam voices into people's heads.

The report titled "Bioeffects Of Selected Nonlethal Weapons" was released under the US Freedom of Information Act and is available on this website (pdf). The DoD has confirmed to New Scientist that it released the documents, which detail five different "maturing non-lethal technologies" using microwaves, lasers and sound.

Released by US Army Intelligence and Security Command at Fort Meade, Maryland, US, the 1998 report gives an overview of what was then the state of the art in directed energy weapons for crowd control and other applications.

The voice thing is being used in stores to target shoppers in an area of the store rather than making an announcement via speaker.

If you think that is scary, you should have seen the product that Northrop Gruman requested the company I work for to help develop.

We build laser measurement equipment.

They were asking us if we could engineer a device to withstand 10,000 watts of laser power in 1 millisecond. We obviously told them no such device could be made with current technologies, but it scares me to think that they have developed such a laser.

To put that in perspective, a common Co2 laser I use at work will turn a household brick into green glass in less than five seconds at a measly 150 watts.

150W/5000ms = .03 w per millisecond to turn brick to glass

vs their 10,000 W per millisecond.

Not sure what they are planning to do with it.

The current most powerful laser that I know of is 10,000 watts per second, and you can't even be in the same room when one of them are running because if any of the reflected beam hits you you are toast.

The experiments have been going on for some time.
Where do you think the whole "Tin Foil Hats" thing came from.
Not all those folks are crazy.

The Government really IS beaming thoughts.

Missile killer.

I think it's a great idea that the government is developing technology to beam thoughts into our heads. It'll save us the trouble of thinking for ourselves, and it'll keep us from getting confused by all those other thoughts and points of view that they can't quite get rid of by large-scale media mergers.

:D

ok i think they already got to you

No. I'm just saying that it's a natural evolution in warfare and technology. If human beings have the capability to do something, we will do it just because we can. I'm sure people in the 19th century were scared by this new technology called a Gatling Gun and now we consider such a device primitive. I'm not suggesting it is a good thing, but its inevitable.

Well, there's a difference between beaming words into ones ear and beaming thoughts into ones head.

I'll be fine, I doubt they can compete with the voices already living in my head. :D

Seriously, If they ever use this on the civilian population then they should be held accountable. I see a good technology for military intelligence purposes, though.

alright i was kidding, but i do know that most of the technologies that are "introduced" to the mainstream have been in use in the military for 30-40 years.... so many of the things that we are like "holy crap look at this new gadget" has been used by our government since the 50s

I just have infinite fear of the capabilities we actually have that none of us know about... i remember first getting google earth... i was fascinated and spent as much time scrolling around the world on there as I do now on these forums, i found many weird things around the world and found many areas where i could zoom in close enough to see what people were wearing... and i thought... christ if im capable of seeing this, the government has been capable of seeing in my living room for years....

Hmmmm

You know, it has just occurred to me that the Surge is Working!

I know. I'm not suggesting that the government should use this kind of technology, but it would show up somewhere or another in the free market eventually. And once such a device can be in the hands of anyone that can pay for it, the government will be the least of my worries. I'm completely against the government using this sort of technology, but it will be used in one form or another...it's inevitable.
