Help - Panic Over Primary Deadlines

I was in a state of panic when I realized that I had yet to mail in my
voter registration form to change my party affiliation so I can vote in the Sept.
18th NY primary. I did however also discover that I still have time: The mail -
in form must be postmarked by midnight on August 24th (this Friday!!), and
received no later than August 29th.

You'll have to forgive me as I'm really still very confused about all this. What is
the upcoming Sept. 18th primary for? Is it when residents vote for a candidate
to be placed on the presidential ballot in NY? (How many votes would be needed for this?)
Because I looked up primaries in Wikipedia and it listed a different date for NY - Feb. 5th 2008.
Is this Feb. primary date for delegates only?

Do you think enough RP supporters know about these looming primary
deadlines?? (Or am I the only dweeb??) I intend to go down to my county
elections office to hand deliver my form. I'm just really concerned about other
Ron Paul supporters! Seems this sort of state by state information is a little difficult to come by.
(And to be promoted as reminders to people)

I was also trying to find out the primary date info for NJ for my sister. ( I
converted her over to our side yesterday!) I wanted to email the info to her
asap, but I haven't had much luck in my search.

Any info/opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This is bad if more people need to switch to GOP in order to vote

Is Iowa's primary only open to registered Repubs?

Yep.

The NY Sept 18, 2007 Primary has NOTHING to do with the federal elections in '08.

This is a primary for a general election in NY State in Nov '07.

No federal candidates will be on this ballot unless being elected to fill a vacancy.

Whew.... Thanks!

I know each state has it's own set of rules and NY says in order to vote in a primary, you have to be registered in a party (you can't vote in a primary if you are an independent) It's not the same for all states but I know it is for NY.

That's why I've been so concerned. I'm an independent. In this case, I have to change to Republican in order to vote for Ron Paul.

OK, so if this is just for local elections when are we supposed to vote in Ron Paul to be placed on the NY ballot as a candidate for president? Do us regular people get to vote on that or is it just the GOP delegates?

They really don't keep the public informed about all this. It's very confusing.

Thanks..

I can't find the calendar for NY primaries for '08. But I imagine you have plenty of time and that the federal primaries in NY are sometime next spring... You vote for the delegates in the primary, but elect them by the candidate they are pledged to... The delegates then go to the convention and do the nominatin'. ;)

The deadline for registration, in NY, for the presidential primary is Mid Oct, (14th?).

We went to the Election Board and twice the lady seemed be confused, telling us we were too late. After the first time we called Albany, when we went back we had to explain it to her...
