About this event:

We are pleased to welcome David Hogg and Spike Cohen on Wednesday, April 10 at 6:00 pm for an expert debate on gun control legislation in America. Gun violence prevention activist David Hogg and former Libertarian vice presidential candidate Spike Cohen will discuss various aspects of the issue, including the Second Amendment, public safety, and policy effectiveness. The debate will be held in-person in Filene Auditorium and live-streamed at dartgo.org/gundebate [see the video embedded below - OB].

David Hogg, a survivor of the Parkland school shooting, has become a prominent voice of his generation advocating against gun violence. Co-founding March For Our Lives, he led one of the nation's largest demonstrations, rallying 800,000 protestors in Washington, D.C. A Harvard graduate, David co-founded Leaders We Deserve, aiming to elect young progressives.

Spike Cohen was the Libertarian candidate for Vice President in 2020. Traveling across the country and speaking with victims of the War on Guns, he has seen firsthand the harms caused by gun control, and the dire need to end it. He is the Founder of You Are The Power, a nonprofit dedicated to helping people who are being victimized by their local governments.

The Dartmouth Political Union is the preeminent non-partisan, student-led political organization at Dartmouth College. The DPU promotes open discourse by hosting speakers from across the political spectrum, holding student debates, and organizing campus-wide discussions on relevant political issues. 30 minutes in... Hogg starts out by backtracking a bit, saying that his greatest concern is not guns themselves, but death by suicide. As to be expected, Spike is focusing on natural rights and the fact that guns are merely a tool and not the cause of various types of gun deaths.

Hogg is throwing out a lot of fallacies, assumptions and unproven “facts”. His biggest point is that the problem with guns is that they are too effective for suicides. He claims that if it weren't for guns, there would be fewer successful suicides, and that suicidal people would get help after failed attempts. Of course he does not have data on this, and his solution to everything seems to be “the government needs to spend billions to study the issue”. Hmmm. Wonder who gets that money?

Issues concerning poverty, suicide, mental health, etc. should be addressed separately, keeping in mind that much [though not all] of these problems are caused by government, pharmaceutical, education, etc., which opens up other big cans of worms. It's not "the guns".

Gun control activist David Hogg took a Q&A during a speaking event at Dartmouth recently, and that was a huge mistake because this woman, Lily Tang Williams, who escaped Chinese communism and is now running for office as a Republican in New Hampshire, happened to be in the crowd and packing one of the most mind-blowing gun debate questions of all time.
