Gorbachev: Russia, China US targets
Mon, 24 Mar 2008 22:53:30

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev says the US missile shield plans in Eastern Europe is aimed against Russia and China, not Iran.

US has from the outset claimed that its proposed missile defense system is against the Islamic Republic.

"Do you believe that that the whole thing is meant against Iran? That's complete nonsense,'' Gorbachev said in an interview with the Czech public television aired Monday, according to AP.

Gorbachev reiterated that Washington is trying to guide its missiles towards Russia and China.

"The entire system is directed against Russia and China, that's how we understand it,'' he said.

"Iran poses no threat. It is possible to deal with Iran with different means, if necessary.''

Here's what Gorbachev thinks about it: United States Targeting Russia, Not Iran

29/11/2007 | Moscow News № 47 2007

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) - Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev said Wednesday that he viewed a U.S. plan to deploy a missile defense shield in Central Europe as targeting Russia, not Iran.
"(On Tuesday) Milos Zeman, the former Czech prime minister, said, ‘What kind of Iran threat do you see? This is a system that is being created against Russia,'" Gorbachev said.
"I don't think Zeman is alone in seeing this. We see this as well as he sees it."

The United States wants to place a radar station in the Czech Republic and intercepter missiles in Poland, saying the components would defend European allies against a possible Iranian strike.
Gorbachev, 76, whose policies of glasnost and perestroika - openness and restructuring - helped end communism in the Soviet Union and its satellites, criticized the high level of military spending by the United States.

"Does America intend to fight the rest of the world, does America need to build a new empire? They will not succeed," Gorbachev said at the close of a meeting of the World Political Forum, a group he founded in 2003 that includes many former high-ranking politicians.
Gorbachev, who won the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize, said negotiations with Iran needed to continue with the involvement of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency, to ensure Iran did not produce nuclear weapons.

Gorbachev said he hoped the United States would not attack Iran during the remainder of the term of U.S. President George W. Bush.

Your 100 % right LEK

If the the US missile shield wanted to be placed against iran why not place in Kuwait? or maybe Israel.

There whole main goal really is been against russia and china.
Just look at where there are nato bases and you will see what i mean.

Yes, NATO bases are arranged around Russia. That should be no surprise. NATO was set up to counter the perceived threat of Russia and the rest of the Soviet Bloc in the years following WWII. Iran and Iraq were not seen as threats at the time.

Russia is I think partially justified in their concern about the installations proposed for Poland and the Czech Rebublic- not because the instalations themselves are really any threat to Russia (the equipment to be used is very old and outdated) but it is more symbolicly threatening Russia who is not happy to see some of their old allies alligning themselves with their former ememy- NATO.

The radar station was used for decades for tests of an anti- missile system in the Marshal Islands. The Island has received a newer radar station and the old one was proposed to go to the Czech Republic.

It could detect missile launches to Europe but launches from Russia towards the US would travel north, over the pole, since that is the shortest and most direct route for such a launch. Iran does not have a missile capable of reaching the US yet.
