New Poll: Fred Thompson Leading in Nevada
June 21st, 2007 by Eric Odom
(Carson City, NV) - A new Citizen Outreach / Battle Born News poll for the Republican presidential nomination in Nevada shows unannounced candidate Fred Thompson leading the field. The June 18th poll surveyed 1,546 registered Republicans. The results:
Fred Thompson - 29.0 percent
Rudy Giuliani - 26.5 percent
Mitt Romney - 20.1 percent
John McCain - 11.0 percent
Others - 13.2 percent
“I believe this is the first GOP presidential poll taken in Nevada with Fred Thompson in the mix,” said Citizen Outreach president Chuck Muth. “And clearly there is strong support for his potential candidacy. However, like Republicans around the country, Nevada Republicans are still relatively split with no break-away front-runner. This is still anybody’s ballgame.”
Muth said candidates who begin spending more time campaigning in the Silver State could significantly improve their numbers. “Support for the top-tier candidates is fluid and thin. A little personal courting of GOP primary voters could go a long way.”
Muth also said John McCain’s relatively poor showing was perhaps the most interesting result in the poll. “He’s the ‘Western’ candidate. He’s also been to Nevada on many occasions even before running for president,” Muth said. “But I suspect his support for the Senate’s current immigration bill is killing him among grassroots Republicans.”
The survey was conducted by Global Automated Telesystems from a randomly selected statewide list of 15,000 Republicans. Approximately 2/3 of respondents live in the Clark County area, with the other third coming from around the rest of the state. The survey has a margin of error of plus/minus four percent.
