Security officials to scan D.C. area license plates

August 18, 2008 - 10:24am

WASHINGTON (AP) - Homeland security officials in the Washington area plan to dramatically expand the use of automated license plate readers to prevent possible terrorist attacks.

Officials from Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia have agreed to install 200 license plate readers on police vehicles, at airports and along roads. The plan announced Friday will be funded by federal homeland security grants for the area.

Britain used the readers in the 1990s to deter Irish Republican Army attacks. But in the United States, the devices have mostly been used to regulate parking or catch car thieves.

The readers will scan every license plate that passes by and will run the numbers through federal criminal and terrorist databases.

New York officials recently said they plan to scan license plates of all cars entering Manhattan.

Privacy experts say it's a vast expansion of the use of technology for security.

Obvious Man says:

This is not about preventing terrorist attacks but simply keeping tabs on where politically incorrect people go.

The fact is that terrorists know how to swap a license plate on whatever vehicle they are using for an attack. Or they can simply steal a bus or truck to load up with explosives. Or they can rent a truck.

So this license system isn't about stopping terror; but simply keeping an eye on YOU!

If they kept the terrorists out of the country in the first place and monitored the border and the terror groups more closely, they government wouldn't have to monitor us.

Of course.

Which is why, of course, that will never happen.

The "Homeland Security" apparatus that has been erected is not to "catch terrorists", it is designed and planned to be used against you.

I like my appeals to emotion; if it is for terrorism
reasons then it is probably bad.
Perhaps just a removal of our rights.

Or

Or maybe stop messing around in other people's business ALL over the damn world so nobody will have a REASON to attack us!

Both need to happen: effective border and immigration control along with a foreign policy shift.

Of course, for reasons already stated, neither will happen.

Amen.

Dh's company does govt contract work. DHS has recently mandated that anyone working on govt projects (he tests concrete for steel degredation in govt structures) must have ID cards which include a lot of personal information. He has refused though his boss and colleague signed up immediately. He just won't be working on those projects. ;)

I don't know how many industries, businesses this affects.

That would be this nightmare:

http://www.tsa.gov/what_we_do/layers/twic/twic_faqs.shtm

The Transportation Worker's ID card or TWIC ( I use a foul reference to a woman's anatomy to describe it) a biometric, horribly invasive ID card that is required for every transport worker, refinery worker, or government project worker.

There are number of things to note about this, first, when you "pay" for one of these horrid things, your cash goes directly to Lockheed Martin, not DHS, not the Treasury, not the Federal gooberment.

Originally concocted in the fetid brain of this man:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Loy

James Loy pushed this concept while he was Commandant of the Coast Guard, and later, as Deputy Director of DHS.

Even though his own people in the USCG were telling him it was redundant and unnecessary, he managed to push the project through.

He resigned from government in April 2005.

He went on to accept a position as, (big freakin surprise here) a member of the board of directors at Lockheed Martin in August 2005.

He is also on the board of yet another creepy, quasi-government, identity tracking company, called L-1 Identity Solutions.

L-1 Identity Solutions, Inc. is the trusted provider of solutions and services that protect and secure personal identities and assets. Together, our portfolio of companies – Viisage, Identix, Integrated Biometric Technology, SecuriMetrics, Iridian, SpecTal, ComnetiX, McClendon, Advanced Concepts, Inc. and Bioscrypt Inc. – deliver the full range of offerings required for solving the problems associated with managing human identity.

Typical Washington slut, selling out freedom, managing us like cattle, and getting rich in the process after setting up the law in his favor.

Tar and feathers are too good for asshats like this.:mad::mad:

Repulsive.

Moral of story, don't drive in DC or NYC anymore. Wonder which city will be next?

There's some kind of bill circulating that would put HHS under DHS. Just think for a few minutes about the implications of that. Just let your mind wander...

Its also a great way of generating revenue for the states and getting people into the criminal system. Imagine how many people driving on suspended licenses, dead tags, etc will be busted when the scanners automatically run a check on every plate they see. That gives the cop cause to initiate a traffic stop, arrest the driver, and search the car.

But its for stopping terrorism....sure.

(BTW, VA trains police officers to run plate checks at every stoplight, so this just makes their current policy easier)

Just one thing to say about this:

What will it take for us to help others become aware of the fact it is not about terrorist but your civil liberties?
