I just received this email from Dr. Sabrin's campaign (they are a clever bunch over there) - what do you think?

The Republican frontrunner to take on Senator Frank Lautenberg, Dr. Murray Sabrin, announced The Sabrin Solution 5-Point Immigration Reform which stresses the importance of making English the official language of the United States at a press conference in Burlington County, New Jersey today (see press release below).

Sabrin Celebrates May 5 not Cinco de Mayo
Maverick Murray Outlines No Amnesty 5-Point Immigration Reform
Mount Holly, NJ - New Jersey conservative Republican leader Dr. "Maverick Murray" Sabrin, the Garden State's strongest advocate of limited government and individual freedom and the front-runner for United States Senate, celebrated May 5th by outlining major immigration reform and calling for English to be made the official language of the United States at the press conference outside the Burlington County Old Courthouse in Mt. Holly, New Jersey at 2:00 p.m..

Dr. Sabrin was joined at the press conference by Justin Murphy, Republican candidate for the 3rd Congressional District, Michael Carr, Republican candidate for Burlington County Clerk, and Burlington County Freeholder candidates Carol Lokan-Moore and Bill Moore.

Dr. Murray Sabrin stated, "It is very important on the 5th of May to reaffirm our commitment to English as the official language of the United States. It was Teddy Roosevelt who said, 'We have one language here, and that is the English language, and we intend to see that the assimilation crucible turns our people out as Americans.'" Sabrin continued, "The U.S. Constitution was written in English and these powerful words bind our nation together. As someone who immigrated legally to the United States as a boy whose second language was English, my family was proud to assimilate into American culture and learn English. I will support the National Language Act when I become a United States Senator and I have outlined The Sabrin Solution 5-Point Immigration Reform."

Justin Murphy, running in the 3rd Congressional Republican Primary remarked, "The Democrats in Congress have failed to address one of the most pressing issues of our time - immigration reform. When I am elected to the United States House of Representatives, I will support the National Language Act and The Sabrin Solution 5-Point Immigration Reform." Murphy continued, "Chris Myers is out of touch with New Jersey families and with Republican voters. As a major donor to the extremely liberal Frank Lautenberg, Chris Myers supported Lautenberg's anti-American record against English and against building a fence along the border. We don't need to send a Republican who thinks like a Democrat to Washington. Chris Myer's money speaks louder than his words!"

Burlington County Clerk candidate, Michael Carr commented, "The taxpayers of Burlington County are demanding their elected officials deal with the illegal immigration problem. They are making the demands in English which is why the Democrats aren't listening." Carr continued, "Assembly Bill 468 and Senate Bill 1090 making English the official language of New Jersey are long overdue and it is time for a change."

Burlington Freeholder candidates, Carol Lokan-Moore and Bill Moore spoke at the press conference as well. Lokan-Moore said, "Local governments are struggling to deal with the lack of immigration reform at the national level. This exemplifies the unfunded mandates the federal and state governments impose on local government. Forcing local governments to print and communicate in multiple languages is unconstitutional and too expensive." Moore said, "It is critical for local officials to speak up (in English) to make English the official language of New Jersey and the United States. Language skills are critical for immigrants to enter the middle class of America and empowering them to succeed. The local governments are dealing with this issue every day and the liberal Democrats in Washington and Trenton are out of touch."

The Sabrin Solution 5-Point Immigration Reform:
1. Secure our borders both North and South from foreign terrorists and illegal immigrants
2. Make English the official language of the United States
3. End birth-rite citizenship
4. Do not allow any amnesty for illegal immigrants to become United States citizens; to become a citizen they must return to their home countries and enter our nation legally
5. For those illegal immigrants who want to live, work and pay taxes (but not be granted citizenship) they must pay a financial penalty and go through a thorough bankground check to become a legal resident.

The press conference is being held on the steps of the Burlington County Old Courthouse (120 High Street, Mount Holly, NJ) at 2 p.m.

Wait... Sabrin wants to make English the official language?

I'm gonna have to fall back on the Thumper rule for this one.

I see... and this would extend to the US and all its states and territories, and be imposed regardless of age?

Puerto Rico is going to have to change its official language, I suppose. After being immersed in message boards, forums of various sorts, and IRC chatrooms for about a decade, I would submit that most "native speakers" could certainly use a refresher course on the English language as well. May we require English as a FIRST LANGUAGE be taught appropriately before we worry about imposing an "official" language blanketly across the nation?

I am always wary of this road. In practice, having an "official" language means nothing more than Government processes and papers being in that language. The way the original article was framed, it makes it seem like the author has an issue with other languages altogether. "Cinco de Mayo" is offensive now? Only when someone who can't speak a lick of Spanish attempts to say it, usually followed up by "i r haz dee serVAYsas toooday sehhnyorr".

While we are at it (and revisiting education), please realize that some of those people who don't speak English as a primary language are, in fact, legal. We're talking about New York and New Jersey. People speak the language of their families, and when your parents' English isn't great, you learn it from the schools. Public schools in New York and New Jersey? Unfortunately, they aren't what they used to be in the 50's. Some parents will go above and beyond, and rush to learn English themselves, but overall, with the way things are you do have some legal citizens whose English is wretched.

Hopefully in the rush to "discourage illegal immigration" we think carefully and don't overstep :)

Wow, i dont agree with this at all. What about a free market of languages?

Why is English the official language? I swear sometimes these people just don't get it....

Major appeals to the anti-immigration crowd did nothing for us throughout many of the primaries. Why does Sabrin think this will go over well, particularly in ultra-blue New Jersey?

I think this is a big blunder. I doubt there is a huge movement for "English only" or "English as the official language" stuff in NJ.

This is great raw meat to throw out to the hard core right wingers in the red states. It might be a winner in Oklahoma, but its a non-starter, at best, in NJ. It'll probably drive away more voters than it will attract.

Who is this supposed to appeal to? Even Republicans in states like NY and NJ tend to be moderates- they aren't like the kind of Republicans you'd find in AL, TX, or OK. It sure as heck won't help with Dems or Indies in NJ.

Sabrin better hope he gets ignored on this issue.

Liberty minded people should regard Cinco de Mayo as a great victory for national sovereignty and a defeat against occupation forces everywhere. A small band of Mexicans armed with only machetes defeated a much larger French army - they took them by surprise at Puebla, Mexico, signalling the end of French occupation in their country. It was one of the last major defeats suffered by European powers in the Americas.

It would better serve Murray Sabrin to highlight this theme for Cinco de Mayo and use it to remind Americans that liberty unites us and that national sovereignty is worth fighting for.

An unfortunate smudge on an otherwise well-polished campaign. Good luck Murray.

There isn't a huge movement, but geez you can hear about it all the time on the English speaking stations. The Hispanic population is way too large and excepted for that type of thing to go over in NJ. By the way most of this is geared toward Spanish speaking.

The 5th of May isn't even the Mexican Independence day.

Umm, for the guy who was saying we should be celebrating independence for everyone today. this isn't an independence day for mexico or america.

that little bit of disinfo always annoys me. normally, i don't say anything.. but on history, i just have to.
