Did Dow Jones close early for a legitimate reason?

Does Dow Jones close at 5pm eastern or 4pm? I thought it was always 4 but they wanted to stop it from crashing by just closing it early?

The media is already spewing out propaganda on how everything is fine and the Meryll deal was so good... this is bizarre.

Hey, Ron Paul Forums is not spelt G*O*O*G*L*E

Do some research before creating an entire thread for one question you could have answered yourself using Google in less time it took you to create this thread in the first place.

Actually I'm wondering the same thing and google and the various business news outlets aren't touching it. Wall Street should be open for another 35 minutes but it pulled the plug early apparently. And none of the media is reporting that?? Or did NY experience a 1-hr time change over the weekend?

I think you mean the New York Stock Exchange anyway. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is an index of 30 large cap stocks.

In the event of catastrophic losses, the dow will close down automatically after a specific percentage of loss has been reached to prevent it from getting worse.

It closed at the normal time- 4 PM EST.

Again... The DOW does not open or close. It's a list.

The NYSE always closes at 4pm EST/EDT

Now that the NYSE is closed, the media is opening. Expect the evening news to be full of panic and speculation (can't say as I blame them, though).

Yes I wrote the OP in haste, you know what I meant by Dow Jones (NYSE). I apologized about it saying it closed early. You don't have to repeat what other people post in the same thread.

On the media: I think they will try to say tomorrow will be better, spin the Meryll/BoA deal as natural and good, and tell us to do nothing.

I think Goldman earnings will be dirt and AIG wont get the funds.

There are multiple levels of "CIRCUIT BREAKERS" installed on the markets. These limits were put in place after Black Monday in order to reduce market volatility and massive panic sell-offs, giving traders time to reconsider their transactions.

There are three circuit breaker levels as of the fourth quarter of 2007, based on changes in the Dow Jones Industrial Average:

Thanks. I've been looking for that all day, but I couldn't figure out what search terms to use. It's like looking up something in the dictionary when you don't know the word. ;)
