Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Wants to Open City-Owned Grocery Stores

JORDAN DIXON-HAMILTON 14 Sep 2023

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) is looking into opening taxpayer-funded, city-owned grocery stores in areas in which businesses have pulled out due to rampant crime.

Johnson announced a partnership with the Economic Security Project to look into the possibility of opening city-owned grocery stores. The first step in the partnership will be to perform a feasibility study, but the city did not provide a timeline, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Johnson claimed his administration is “committed to advancing innovative, whole-of-government approaches to address these inequities.”

The mayor said in a statement:

All Chicagoans deserve to live near convenient, affordable, healthy grocery options. We know access to grocery stores is already a challenge for many residents, especially on the South and West sides. A better, stronger, safer future is one where our youth and our communities have access to the tools and resources they need to thrive. My administration is committed to advancing innovative, whole-of-government approaches to address these inequities.

Economic Security Project senior adviser Ameya Pawar compared the proposal to “the way a library or the postal service operates.”

“The city of Chicago is reimagining the role government can play in our lives by exploring a public option for grocery stores via a municipally owned grocery store and market,” Pawar said. “Not dissimilar from the way a library or the postal service operates, a public option offers economic choice and power to communities.”

The partnership comes as a plethora of mega-retailers have closed multiple stores in Chicago. For example, Walmart closed four out of its remaining eight stores in Chicago in April.

Walgreens and Aldi are among the other businesses that have shut down stores in Chicago.

City-owned grocery stores have been tested in smaller municipalities but never on a scale as large as Chicago.

Although Johnson’s police chief Umi Grisby claimed the city would not be “spending any taxpayer dollars,” Johnson’s office said the grocery stores would be funded by grant money from state and federal tax dollars.

“All of our stores are closing, and so now we have to go outside our neighborhoods to purchase food,” one South Side Chicago resident told CBS News. “I think that’s a good idea that Mayor Johnson is picking up the slack where these big store chains are leaving.”

However, prominent Chicago restaurateur Sam Sanchez said the stores would be “operating in the red,” thus wasting taxpayer dollars.

“Control crime and business will come,” Sanchez opined.

First comes problem > reaction > solution, all three ginned up by government media.

The solution is government competing in a market. In this case, the supermarket market.

When government can't compete, private enterprise either becomes contractors or goes out of business. Medicare accomplished that by making doctors charge even simple cash patients enough to pay a whole staff to process the government paperwork.

Then you get the shelves full of cricketburgers. And nothing else.

oh my GOD

they are communists!

Yes, yes they are...

Did not think it was possible, but, there you go.

Well, he may be a black Marxist in the manner of Robert Mugabe, but at least he is not a hideous sexual deviant like Lightfoot.

If you are white and rich in Chicago, you better get the hell out while you have the chance.

If you are a white communist, you stay right the hell where you are...you are not welcome near me.

“Let me tell you what’s going to happen: we’re going to a place that is full of milk and honey,” he said at a March event. “The Black labor that has built the wealth of white folks, we get to distribute that any way we please."

Do you not want the people of Chicago to be able to eat?!

Sure. But apparently some south siders don't want each other to be able to eat, or they wouldn't destroy every store that appears in the area.

Nothing can stop what's coming, the dollar is in free-fall. Government stores, price controls, sanctions, etc., are only meant as stopgaps. Just trying to keep the lid on before they are ready for the riots to start.

I've been hearing this for 50 years now, and it has yet to happen.

What are the signs right now that would make me think it was going to happen soon?

Convince me Theye will not be able to kick the can down the road for another century or more.

You mean "at a loss"? You mean like that?

Because that's how those things "operate".

“The city of Chicago is reimagining the role government can play in our lives by exploring a public option for grocery stores via a municipally owned grocery store and market,” Pawar said.

You're not "reimagining" shit, you braying jackass.

You're just regurgitating the miserably failed vomitus of the past - and it's not going to work any better for you than it did for the Soviets, et al. (except, perhaps, when it comes to making you and your cronies the boss-flies of the shit-pile you'll have turned everything into - but that's really the whole point, isn't it?).

They say "those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it" - but those who do learn from history tend to think it makes them clever enough to get away with it this time (or at least to trick other people into thinking they can).

“Let me tell you what’s going to happen: we’re going to a place that is full of milk and honey,” he said [...]

Ah, yest! The magical land of Cockaigne Chicago.

Are you truly paying attention? Maybe instead of constantly posting wedge issues, take a look at history. Patterns are your friend. But heck fire, you do you and I'll do me. Have a good day.

They are no longer pretending it's sustainable.

Another hint is, they're fomenting not only division, but self-destruction. Inner city denizens are encouraged to destroy their own homes, neighborhoods, and food stores. Hypochondriacs are demanding poison. Blue cities are getting imported criminals.

They aren't even trying to keep kicking the can down the road. It's pretty obvious. They aren't even kicking it any more. They're stomping on it. They want a new tin can. A global can. A totalitarian can.

Shut up and collect your monthly ration of government-issued cheese cricket paste, comrade.

A Bottom-Up Solution to Crime

The solution is so simple, but Democrats are philosophically incapable of thinking rationally and reasonably about what to do about crime. Obviously, the solution is to empower citizens by allowing open-carry of firearms, which will be a safe and effective deterrent to would-be criminals.

Instead, Democrats will further complicate the issue by ignoring the root causes, blinded by their own hubris.

Or maybe they're far from being blind to the root causes. Indeed, they understand them so well that they're exacerbating them (and very skillfully) with self-destructive verbiage, some of it set to so-called music.

If they're blinded by anything, it's their own desire to possess as much power as Stalin once did.

I agree that there's an element of that in their dismissal of any solution which requires citizens to arm and protect themselves; but I also believe that it's their anthropological and political philosophies which hinder them from "thinking outside of the box" in any serious resolution to crime. By the tenets of those philosophies, Democrats have blinded themselves to real, meaningful solutions because they presuppose that the civil government ought to be the first-responder to any problem within society.

Or maybe we're talking about two different things when we say, "Democrats", because what you say is absolutely true of the rank and file, and what I say is absolutely true of the politicians.

Getting to the Bedrock

Or maybe we're talking about two different things when we say, "Democrats", because what you say is absolutely true of the rank and file, and what I say is absolutely true of the politicians.

I think what I've said applies to both groups. Fundamentally, it all goes back to one's philosophical precommitments, and Democrats have assumptions about human nature and what constitutes "the greater good" in society before they advance any public policy, whether they're the rank-and-file supporters, or the politicians within the Party.

Nonetheless, I do agree that Democrat leaders are controlling the helm of public opinion and action through an agenda-driven crusade to eradicate any opposition to their political goals. But that agenda is, itself, based upon certain axioms of Democratic thought which assume State power is a given.
