This is probably old news, not sure if it has been posted before. But I was surprised to hear about it and how obvious it is. Supposedly this tracking technology was originally mandated "in the name of safety" (for 911 calls), as all violations of civil liberties seem to be. The point is, they know where we are when our cell phones are on.

According to Wikipedia, the FBI can also activate the microphone of a cell phone for eavesdropping.
