AB 935 is modeled on a similar New Zealand law

A bill to ban all tobacco sales to those born after 2007, resulting in the eventual total phase out of tobacco sales in the state in the coming decade, was introduced in the Assembly on Tuesday.

Assembly Bill 935, authored by Assemblyman Damon Connolly (D-San Rafael), would specifically implement a phased tobacco ban by prohibiting a tobacco retailer from selling tobacco products to any person born on or after January 1, 2007. While sales would be legal for anyone born before the cutoff date, the 21-years-old restriction would eventually be replaced by this law. For example, in 2029, only those 22 and older would be able to purchase tobacco, and in 2040, only those 33 years and older. The bill would also provide penalties for violations, including escalating civil fines and the suspension or revocation of the sellers license to sell tobacco products.

Assemblyman Connolly wrote the bill as a measure to improve public healt

Maybe a ban on soy next?

Fruits-n-nuts

The government: "Smoke all the weed and crack you want. Hell, we'll give you free pipes. Don't you dare smoke a cigar however."

I'm still opposed to the failed war on drugs, but government encouraging mind altering drug use is as bad as them heavy handedly trying to ban it.

There's something rotten going on with that, not just the fact that overdoses are killing 100000 young, mostly white, men every year.

Here I revert to "Everything government gets involved in it fucks up."

The question is why?

Is it as simple as playing political favor to the masses or is it malevolent to the point of "Kill 'em off"?

In the end the answer is the same, strict constraints on government and harsh, public punishment for even attempting to overstep their bounds.

The view that government is the all nurturing mother and the ever protective father must be put to rest! Government is a bunch of carpetbaggers vying for ever larger portions of our labor. Exactly like the single mother who keeps breeding in order to increase her allotment.

You know this won't apply to cigars... at least not to premium cigars.

They have no problem targeting cigarette smokers or vapers, but they're not going to mess with the country club crowd without significant loopholes.

In NY the new punitive tobacco taxes apply to cigars as well, and they already banned "flavored" cigars.

They don't want nicotine to benefit young men. However drink and smoke to kill your testosterone young man.

Pretty much agree- except natural weed doesn't kill anybody. Not to mention that the only reason it became illegal in the first place was so that .gov could make hemp look "evil" so that big corps would have no competition in areas like fuel, cotton, etc.

Kind of ironic that all the peeps who scream about "evil" fossil fuels never mention hemp, which completely helps the environment.

(And, I have no problem with fossil fuel. )

“It’s hard to gauge the total popularity of the bill right now, but with well over 2 million smokers still in California, those for tobacco won’t be going down without a fight.”

AB 935 is expected to be assigned to Assembly Committees soon.

Doesn't look to have moved forward, just introduced. Probably won't go anywhere.

50 whacks with a sand filled rubber hose for this bills sponsor and 40 for the co-sponsors.
