Bob Barr???

I enjoy reading libertarian and classical liberal articles and books but never joined the libertarian party because I didn't think it would be honest: I'm not truly a libertarian. I've even struggled and thought long and hard about it but could never bring myself to do it. I'm not going to join something if I can't agree. It's not right for me to do that and it isn't fair to the party. Instead, I simply call myself by the more generic term, "classical liberal" and will vote for certain libertarian candidates if I so choose.

To my surprise, Bob Barr is now the <i>presidential candidate</i> for the libertarian party but is less libertarian then myself!! How bazaar. Sometimes he seems to repudiate his voting record but in most of the interviews I've seen he defends his record, which should disqualify him as a true libertarian.

I agree with you, cellist. The Libertarian party is supposed to be the party of principle, but it looks like this year they gave up on that to try and get their names in the headlines. It was a poorly planned move, in my opinion. I don't want everyone's first impression of the LP to be a candidate who wrote the "We Hate Gay People" bill (AKA Defense of Marriage Act), and now claims to oppose it.

I like the Bob Barr flame wars almost as much as I like the Granny Warriors insanity.

Well. I am voting for a third party getting up the political ladder...if Bob Barr happens to be the candidate..so be it. Common sense. We have to get off this 2 party system. I submit..if we get the LP up there it will make a way for other 3rd parties as well. Won't you join me? Tones

Why do you assume you have to be a "true" libertarian (purist) to be a member of the LP? That's extremely short sighted of you to think this. Are the democrats in the democratic party "true" communists? hm.

No, democratic party is made up of liberals, not communists. However, the communists in the Communist Party are communists. And the libertarians in the Libertarian Party should be libertarians

Bob Barr voted in favor of the patriot act and the Iraq war. The patriot act allows the FBI to search financial, telephone and email records without a warrant. How can a libertarian support this? Also, libertarians are supposed to be non-interventionists. When the war broke out in Iraq I checked the Libertarian Party web site and they had articles condemning the war. I never liked either the patriot act or the Iraq war so Bob Barr is less libertarian then myself, and I don't even consider myself a libertarian.

Whenever I would go through the process online to join the libertarian party it would direct me to check a little box saying I do not believe in using the initiation of force for political ends. I can't subscribe to that (at least not yet). I believe that holding to the non-initiation of force leads, philosophically, to anarchy (I agree with the anarcho-capitalists on that one). But I agree with Ayn rand that government is necessary. To believe that government is necessary, in my opinion, results in initiation of force, as I may not approve of every judge, every senator, every police officer, yet I have no choice in the matter. So I conclude that the non-initiation of force philosophy, as admirable as it is, is impossible to achieve in this life. So I haven't joined the libertarian party.

That's my reason; I just can't check that little box!

I'm pretty sure I'll be voting for Barr in November. Not for the man, but for the party, the principles, and the end of the two party system. And since Barr isn't going to win, I don't have to really worry if he's a real Libertarian or not.

And Wayne Root would dominate in the VP debate.
