Washington Times: Libertarians seek Barr candidacy

Former Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia is considering a third-party presidential run — a bid that could steal support from Republican John McCain and potentially offset the damage Ralph Nader"s candidacy is predicted to have on the Democratic candidate.

Mr. Barr, a House Republican impeachment manager during President Clinton's administration, yesterday confirmed his interest in running as a Libertarian but said he is unwilling to talk about any "polling we may have done or may do, not at this point."

"There is great deal of dissatisfaction with the candidates for the two major parties, particularly among conservatives, but also a great deal of Internet and other support for a candidate like Ron Paul who advocates libertarian and true conservative principles," said Mr. Barr, who is now a Libertarian.

(snip)

An aide to Ron Paul, the Texas congressman who remains in the Republican race, said his boss likes Mr. Barr and has talked to him about his prospects with Mr. Paul”s supporters. Mr. Paul broke Internet fundraising records in his run for the Republican nomination and has an e-mail list of 400,000 committed donors and activists that would be helpful to a general-election run by Mr. Barr.

Mr. Barr declined to say whether he has approached Mr. Paul.

in that article was this line

"John McCain is the presumptive nominee, and the Republican Party is uniting behind his vision for low taxes, strong national and fiscal responsibility."

i couldn't stop myself from laughing when i read that.

This reminds me of someone I thought would be great to run as an indpendent. Hear me out...
The man I'm thinking of is incredibly sharp, has worked in politics for decades, has better name recognition straight outta the box than anybody else mentioned so far, he's already got millions of supporters in the U.S. and around the globe ready and willing to go on the warpath, word on the street is that the U.S. military is nuts about him, his record is incomparable, and he's written several books about his political ideas. Some may have heard of him, others maybe not. You can find out more about him HERE.
Sure, and independent candidate has a hard hard road, and he may lose, but... let it be said that if a candidate did not run, he'll most assuredly lose. But, if he does run, he just might win.

Don't get me wrong, I'd much rather vote for independent candidate for president Ron Paul. But it's becoming painfully obvious that Paul is just not going to do it. Barr has supported Paul, his issues and is well-liked. He'll probably get Ron Paul's endorsement if he does run; Paul is not going to endorse or support McCain, Clinton or Obama. Barr is a fine replacement candidate.

Maybe Ron Paul would be Barr's vice president? Paul's biggest complaint about running third party is how tiring it is. As the VP, Paul wouldn't have to do near as much.

Barr/Paul ticket plz!
15% in the polls plz!
Debates plz!
Presidency plz!

A Barr/Paul ticket would be wonderful if it worked the way Bush/Cheney has, with Paul basically making all the key decisions as a 'CEO' type VP, while Barr plays figurehead or show captain.

Bob was pretty cagey about this when I asked him if he might be running on Monday. I am glad to see this!

That means that George Phillies may have to back off.

We need someone to vote for who intends to win!

No ^&%$ing &^%$ what a joke

"There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again." —President George W. Bush, Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 17, 2002

Considering Barr voted for the Patriot Act (though now claims to regret it) I'd find it very difficult to support him - and I doubt Ron would endorse him.

Yeah, Barr voted for the Patriot Act, but at least he had the good sense to realize it was wrong. I believe he will get Ron Paul's endorsement if he runs. Seems like a happy compromise if Ron Paul is truly insistent on not running as an independent. It gives us someone to vote for instead of a pointless write-in that won't even be counted.

If he repented, that's good enough for me. Barr is not Ron Paul, but really no one else is.

I would vote for Barr even if he didn't get Ron Paul's endorsement (if Ron Paul wasn't on the ballot).

Remember, it is about the message, not the man. Given the choice between Obama, Clinton, McCain, and Bob Barr.... uhmmm how hard is that decision? Really.

If Barr did lock up the LP nomination, do you think the CP would also back him if he chose RP as his running mate? The CP views RP as pretty much completely in step with their platform. Fusing those two voting blocks together and than targeting independents and disenfranchised Christian conservatives could result in us making a pretty big splash in November! I really hope this happens, I'm excited.

Bob Barr would be the kind of candidate that would bring some legitimacy back to the LP, and maybe even 8-10% in the polls closer to the election. Id vote for him, campaign for him, and would hope that Ron paul would endorse him.

if barr runs hes got my vote, SC doesnt allow write in votes and if paul doesnt get the nomination then this guy needs to be on my ballot
