Afghan Prison Break!

why do u guys all seem so happy about this?

More loose taliban are not a good thing at all. They will probably either go back to oppressing their own people or killing our soldiers. I hope every one of them lives a very short life.

Freedom is popular.

I wonder how many of these guys were given a trial.

While there were also ordinary criminals in the jail, families of many of the prisoners have said their relatives were swept up in military operations and wrongly imprisoned.
The prison was recently the scene of unrest, with some 400 prisoners staging a hunger strike in May to protest their long detention without trial. Some had been held for as long as two years without trial, and some were being refused the right to appeal very harsh sentences

Some 300 women who came to protest outside the prison at the time said their relatives inside had been picked up by NATO and American military sweeps and were innocent but nevertheless held without trial for months and even years. Local elders and government officials negotiated an end to the protest and promised better conditions and justice. Yet, the jailbreak is likely to prove popular with many local families.

It sounds like they were freed by "their own" people, and our soldiers couldn't be killed if they weren't an occupying force in a foreign land.

Newspaper Headline: "Ron Paul supporters cheer for the success of the Taliban! Could they make it any easier for their political opponents? Experts doubt it."

And i don't care if they weren't given trials. Most POWs aren't.

All kidding aside: No it's not a good thing IMO. However, facts are facts and looks like this going to be bigger problem for Pakistan and the USA too. UGH just what we need. So, we are backing both Afganistan and Pakistan but Pakistan has openly refused to allow US troops to search and destroy Alqeada and/or Taliban within Pakistani borders because Musharif whats his army to do it, but they aren't. So now Karsai from Afganisan is going to send his army in to weed out the Taliban in Pakistan. So, we all know whats next....(Thats right)...we train and equip more Afgani troops to mount the offensive that Musharif wont in the mountainous border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan. So if your a Taliban leader what do you want to do? They were responsible for the assasination of Bhutto and Karsai has survived four attempts so far, this guy should play the powerball! he's one lucky S.O.B. thats all I'm sayin.
watch and see this play out...(hope I'm wrong).

For your information, this happened in Kandahar, not far from the Pakistan border. Many of the Taliban fighters are tribesmen from Pakistan who cross over into Afghanistan to kill for fellow Pashtun tribes.

Hell, the rise of the Taliban is thanks mostly to the Pakistan madrassas who recruited tons of young kids to go across to Afghanistan fight and kill Shiite Muslims in the name of Allah(funded by Saudi charity monies of course).

if the Gov can secure a prison, what makes them think they can secure ou nation?

From my understanding of it, the prison was in a period of transition to Afghan National force. NATO has the Canadians controlling that region and there were only few Americans there, and other coalition troops. Even Canada now is saying it wasn't there fault.

I refer to this,

Sounds local to me.

WHAT WAR??? When did Afghanistan declare war?
They are NOT Prisoners of War.
They are victims of invasion. They were captured by foreign invaders for defending their own land.

Also is is the duty of prisoners to escape(or attempt it). I applaud their efforts, as a soldier.
If this land was invaded , I would do the same.

Regardless of whether the war is constitutional or not, it is STILL a war. And they are prisoners captured during that war. Hence, "prisoners of war."

Don't be naive. There may be some legitemate "freedom fighters" in there, but my guess is that they are a bunch of fanatical wife-beaters who will go back to raping/pillaging their own country. How come these "freedom fighters" always have a tendency to blow up their own people?

People like you assume the following: "if they are the USA's enemy, they must be good." It's not so black-and-white, i'm afraid

Things in Afghanistan seem to be heating up as Iraq calms down (relatively speaking, of course- Iraq is no picnic)
