Politicians on both sides now say globalization and free trade is bad. Much of what they say is just WRONG.

It’s time to debunk their myths.

I watched that last week, but didn't share. I know Stossel likes to report like he's talking to 3rd graders, but I don't think he does a very good job here.

First, the MOST important thing is to distinguish between global trade and global governance... He doesn't do it. So, "globalization" already has a negative connotation.
Then, he doesn't touch the (mistaken) idea that if we trade, we'll become dependent on it and won't be able to adjust if things go bad.

I also don't think they did the argument any favors in trying to debunk the "race to the bottom" myth. Of course there is a race to the bottom - if someone can do something cheaper, that creates more value! It's what the free market is all about. And it helps everyone. It directs more resources to where they are needed most and it allows the rest of the world to benefit from it. And this moron says no parent wants their child to go into the factory or the farm, but they only do it because they have no other choice?? Is that really how he feels about factory workers and farmers?! Most factory workers do it to fund their lifestyle outside of work - they don't really care about how they spend their time at work if it brings home enough to enjoy their life. And farmers?! Many of them do it because they like the idea of working the land and creating something that can be sold for profit. This guy approaches this whole topic from an elitist point of view.

Liberty is too good an idea to be poorly defended.

New Cato project: "Defending Globalism".

LOL. Beltway libertarians always know where their bread gets buttered. Same place as Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer.

I support free trade, but can't stand propagandists giving simplistic unicorns and rainbows reasoning while ignoring everything else.

"You got laid off? Great news, now you can do what you have always wanted to do!"

My thoughts exactly. Ivory tower elitist thinking. And yes, very poor people in other cultures do want to send their children out to work to support the family. Just like our great-grandparents or other ancestors did right here in the US. Kids took on tasks at the farm as soon as they were able.

Ivory tower: "OMG, parents would never want their children to get up early in the morning and milk cows! That's cruel! That's barbaric! That's for peons, mundanes and untouchables!"

I really liked that OP video. Not all people in this country are absolute experts who believe they are above everybody else. The presentation is simplistic and a good starting point. Especially in this political climate where China-Russia-Mexico are considered to be hostile-enemy-degenerates and "we must obliterate them off of the face of the earth".

I am going to play this at our next get together for a couple of the newcomers. If they show interest, maybe they will be open to reading Mises for more in-depth. If not, life goes on ;-)

Belt-way libertarian. Not sure what that means. Is that what I am? If so, I am proud to be :-)

"You got laid off? Great news, now you can do what you have always wanted to do!"

I suppose some folks believe that companies actually owe them a job :tears:

Reagan could have fit the description. But primarily, that refers to Cato.

Then I don't believe I fit that description.

As far as CATO, I've seen folks dog them out sometimes, but then I don't 100% agree with any site that I read. If a piece hits me, I'll post or share it out, otherwise I simply disregard it and move on.

I did find this:

Explaining Beltway Libertarians

.
.
After Murray Rothbard and the Cato Institute permanently parted company, in the manner described in Part I...
.
.
Although he is largely favorable to the free market and believes that the Austrian school has contributed insights, Cowen remains a strong critic of Austrian and Rothbardian views.

It was always a scam.

John F. Stossel was born on March 6, 1947, in Chicago Heights, Illinois, the younger of two sons, to Jewish parents who left Germany before Hitler rose to power.

THINK.

America is losing on trade and the destruction of our industries and the socialization of our welfare dependent population proves it, especially the way we are already dependent on hostile foreigners for strategic necessities.
The only people winning are the international globalists who take all the profit.
Our manufacturing is only "high" because they count in dollar terms and count assembling things primarily produced elsewhere at the full dollar amount as if it was made here and that we are not dependent on foreigners doing most of the manufacturing.
The race to the bottom is real, it is successfully reducing the American middle class and labor class to peasants who can be paid as little as slave laborers or made welfare voters.
China is the world's biggest polluter and in ways that affect the whole world. (CO2 is not a pollutant)
Free trade ALWAYS leads to political union, that's why the Common Market turned into the EU, and it is the plan for creating world government.

This video is trash tier shallow globalist propaganda.
